Tells the history of Holland as a maritime trading nation. Very interactive with all the video exhibits having English subtitles. We spent 3 hrs there which was about right but you can so easily spend much longer. If you like maritime history this is well worth a visit. If you speak Dutch I am sure the experience is even better. Bathroom facilities were exceptionally clean although our visit was early in the day.

The Dutch really are amazing sailors and traders, and some time in this museum makes that reality come to life. While there, it is not too hard to imagine sailing on the Amsterdam to the Spice Islands, or put yourself in the lyrics of a sea shanty. Wonderful museum.

You don't need to be a naval history buff to enjoy a couple of hours or longer here.
The layout is spacious so the kids that were there didn't get underfoot. There are also a number of interactive displays to use - the globe projector & modern harbour display were pretty good.
The highlight is probably the full sized replica of the Dutch East India Company (VOC) Indiaman moored outside. Very interesting to look around and get a sense of scale.
In short, recomended!

During our recent visit to Amsterdam, my wife and I enjoyed our visit to the National Maritime Museum. We were particularly impressed with the exhibits detailing the Dutch slave trade in the Netherlands. Before entering the main museum, a replica of the Leusden, a Dutch West India Company slave ship, is moored outside. It is a well made replica and provides insight as to the horrible conditions endured by the slaves being transported from Suriname to the Netherlands. The display of the tiny sleeping areas was chilling.

Once in the museum, we walked through a doorway which was marked De Zwarte Bladzijde or The Dark Chapter. While in the darkened area we heard audio of what the slaves must have sounded like asking where they are headed and why they are being held captive. Paper tags hang from the ceiling, scribbled with the names, ages and dates of capture of the nearly 700 Africans on board who eventually perished at sea while the crew safely escaped. The exhibit also includes videos of scholars who provide a detailed overview of the the slave trade and particularly the affect on Suriname, the Dutch colony.

This museum has done an excellent job in the creation and presentation of these exhibits. Well done!

I was disappointed with the Dutch Maritime Museum, although the replica sailing ship is magnificent. I was hoping for a serious telling of the story of Dutch maritime history, but they've used their magnificent space for a dumbed-down interactivity. Rijksmuseum basement has a lovely collection of fine naval models, don't miss that.
