Great place to visit and spend a few hours learning about Amsterdam's trade/Golden age history. Exhibits are interesting and if you wanted to you could easily spend most of the day here. The replica ship moored outside is an extra bonus and well worth a look around. Great building too.

The main attraction is an old ship replica moored outside. The rest of the museum is quite poor on exhibits, but not uninteresting. In the exhibit about the Golden Age I didn't really care about the "human interest" period stories that were the center of it.

I really enjoy naval history, but when it comes to The Netherlands, it's all about the Golden Age of the 17th-mid-18th centuries.

I wanted to give it a worse rating because of this, but at the same time, the layout allows you to really explore, they have a lovely ship in the harbour, and the maps and paintings are worth the look. Sadly I was unable to access the library; that would've been really awesome to me, and I'm sure I would've found lots of awesome stuff there!

This very imposing Maritime museum can be reached after a brisk walk from Central. The building is imposing and so too is the replica Amsterdam at dockside. Very interesting to go over the ship and soak up the experience.
The museum has three floors of exhibits arranged N, S, E, W. and many of them are light and sound shows explaining historical events. One exhibit on slavery actively canvasses the public opinion on certain issues. A bit of a departure from the normal heavy exhibits.
I found I was looking for more mass displays and more content, as some aspects of Marine history were only touched on. The display of measuring instruments is very complete and labelling of each item would be better than a master legend at one end of the cabinet you had to refer to for every examination. The arrangement of the rooms is a bit confusing and they could do better with a more simple layout and reference map.

Even if you're averse to the sea (as I am due to severe motion sickness) you can't help but enjoy this museum that traces Holland's love affair with the sea which contributed to its economic rise through world-wide trading starting in the early 17th century. A full-size sailing ship is permanently moored at the museum and available to board and see how the sailors lived and worked at sea. Ship models, maps and original documents form the backbone of the museum and it makes for a fun rainy day activity. I think that most kids generally would like this place; others would love it.
