“Loved the globes!”
Reviewed April 19, 2013

The Scheepvaartmuseum only reopened last year. It was high time to pay a visit. The inner courtyard has been glazed so that it is a perfect refuge from the wind and rain of a wintery day. The museum is designed with children in mind, combining modern technology and fun activities with historic material which can be of interest to all. In particular I loved the globes. One in particular is a combination of modern technology with historic material. You twist a brass globe about on its base and on the wall a projection show any number of different globes from a variety of periods. I found it surprising that even English globes still referred to Australia as New Holland in as late as the 1850s.
I also learned the origin of a Dutch expression 'op de valreep' ... Funny what you can learn in unexpected circumstances. Oh, and the ship berthed out the back is definitely worth clambering about. Little people are at a definite advantage here.

“extra enjoyable visit”
Reviewed April 19, 2013

A beautiful building, felt like it had just opened, a little confusing trying to
find our way around, at first. All the exhibits were interesting/enthralling,
interesting that there was music in the picture gallery.
If there had been a little more information would have warranted 6

“Shipping masters of the world”
Reviewed April 19, 2013

Great place to learn about the shipping and colonial history of the Netherlands. The exhibitions are interactive, and offer personal narratives of people who were sailors, maids, slaves, etc. Great map room, model ship room. Includes a replica ship that traveled to Indonesia. Beautiful building, wonderfully renovated. Nice museum shop.

“What a feast of maritime wonders!”
Reviewed April 18, 2013

Loved all the exibits, especially the replica of the Amsterdam. Found the layout very confusing and wasted time going up stairs with no entry to where I wanted to go. Maybe the guideook or the posters at each entrance could be a bit clearer about what you can access from that entry point. The cafe/restaraunt was good with great service. Wish I could have taken some photographs on board the Amsterdam.

“Enjoyable visit”
Reviewed April 17, 2013

If the idea of a maritime museum interests you, then you should definitely pay a visit. This museum has many different exhibits including maps, globes, art, whales, and more. I went on a guided tour and really appreciated the insight of the guides.
