Owner description: Expand your world at NEMO Science Museum. In the largest science museum of the Netherlands you will find proof that science and technology can be captivating for all ages. The remarkable building on top of the IJ-tunnel offers five floors of exciting hands-on activities. At NEMO you can experience the joy of science and technology, by blowing gigantic soap bubbles, watch an enormous chain reaction and experiment in a real laboratory. In a variety of exhibitions you can 'Take a journey through the mind' or learn that there is more than meets the eye when it comes to sustainable electricity and smart transportation at 'Smart Technology'. Enjoy a magnificent view over Amsterdam The creative mind behind NEMO, build in 1997, is Italian architect Renzo Piano. He had a clear vision for his design of the NEMO building, with its very own piazza 22 metres above water level. The spectacular roof terrace has a magnificent view over Amsterdam and the Eastern Docklands. You can access the roof terrace free of charge. The roof terrace and cafe in NEMO are the perfect places to sit back, relax and enjoy a drink.
Useful Information: Activities for older children

There are many interesting activities inside; but for sure it would have been more fascinating and funnier if you had been a child. To improve the service, maybe it's advisable to put other activities for adults too.

We visited here with our three children (12, 9 & 6) and had a great time. As science centers go this one is clearly aimed at the younger set, which was fine with us. There were a lot of hands-on displays and most of them had Dutch and English explanations.

I'd recommend this "museum" for families with young children. However, if you're looking for an experience like the Science Museum in London or the Deutsches Museum in Munich you won't find it here.

We did not have children with us so choose not to go in, but walked up the stairs for the wonderful view, Everyone we spoke to said it was great for children. Their cafe was good value for money and on a nice day the views were great.

While in the port of Amsterdam for the day on a 27 night cruise my eight year-old son and I went to the Nemo Science Center. It was a 15 minute walk from the port passing under the train tracks.
Nemo contains excellent hands-on learning activities for children and adults and kept my son occupied for about three hours. Exhibits are in Dutch and English.

His favorite exhibit was about how to turn rainwater into clean drinking water. There were many different things to do and see but it did get crowded in places.

Beware that there is an x-rated section on the top floor that is not appropriate for children. We stumbled into it and quickly diverted.

There is a little cafe for sandwiches, ice cream and drinks inside and a coffee shop the ground floor. If you have time and the weather is decent, go to the rooftop for the view.

The building had free wifi but I had trouble with it and asked one of the employees for help. He and others were trying to help but still it didn't work on my iPhone. So, they were nice and gave me access to the employee wifi.

We bought a few things in the gift shop before leaving. Oh, and I forgot to mention that there are lockers available for .50.

I recommend it for families but be careful of the area upstairs if you want to avoid a serious discussion about sex with your kids.
