We dropped by the outlet in Schiphol Plaza. They literally sell everything made under its name; from baby clothes and toys, umbrella, food items, innerwear, clothes to stationery, toiletries, pastries, baking products and gardening tools, you named it, they have it.

The items here are very affordable and lots of variety. Although the outlet in Schiphol is not as big as the one in the city, we spent almost an hour and half browsing through their stuffs. I would say the price did not compromise on the quality of the product and just in case your luggage didn't arrive during arrival, this is the place to go!!!

I wished I had more time in AMS just to visit the oulet in Kalverstraat!

I visited Hema market at Hoofdorp to buy something to eat; inside there were so many delicious breads and croissants, cookies especially local cookies such as stroopwaffels. The staff at the cashier was so helpful and friendly. Paying with credit cards was also so easy.

This chain of supermarkets is highly recommended for mid-budget visitors to Amsterdam, particularly if you're staying at a non-catered serviced aparment. Most of the fresh food options here are slightly cheaper than Albert Heijn.

If you're looking for even more affordable groceries, you may want to try other chain supermarkets such as LIDL or JUMBO which cater to a more working-class clientele. They are slightly further away from the Centraal area which is populated mostly with HEMA and AlbertHeijn supermarkets.

Other your typical groceries, HEMA sells prepaid SIMs which are significant bargains for short term visitors, compared to getting one at telco shops such as vodafone or T-mobile!

They have a €5 SIM card that comes with €5 worth of included-credit. A few data bundles can be bought from the already-included credit. I purchased mine at the Jodenbreestraat outlet (near Waterlooplein) and the staff were able to decipher the Dutch instructions for me, although they did not seem very familiar with how to use it.

It's not straightforward at all, but presents a bargain for mobile data when you sort it out.
With the credit in the SIM, you can purchase data bundles:
€1.25 for 25MB (use within 1 day), or €2.95/5.95 for 50/200MB (use within 1 week)
However, to do so, you may need to google translate the HEMA website (it's only in Dutch) to find the instructions (NOT found in the user manual), which involves calling a 3 digit number with the SIM inside your phone - steps are hard to understand but actually very easy when you finally do.

For the cheap SIM cards alone, this supermarket gets my vote :-)

I've only visited the store off Dam Square, and the store on Kalvertsraat. Both are well stocked with the essentials, everything from underwear, umbrellas, and food items, to bicycles, office supplies, and socks. My absolute favorite thing about the stores are the snack bars, usually located near the front of the store, and the sit down restaurants towards the back or upstairs. They are great for a cheap eat. In fact, in the morning they offer a breakfast sandwhich, croissant, and coffe for 1.50 Euro! The snack bar offers a cheap sausage. Great if your on the go.

My friend in Eindhoven bought me a bargain train ticket from Hema. I found 2 Hema shops in Dam Square area. It just like Target or H&M. They sells clothing from the developing countries, so the price is cheap. They have a supermarket and food stall sells cheap food on certain time.
