We stayed on a houseboat on this canal for a week. The houseboat was great and the canal itself is a "cultural highway." Evenings on the canal are very busy as boats take leisurely cruises along the canal. Great for people watching, not so great for sleeping. While we did not travel along the canal by boat, we did walk along the canal on several occasions. Amsterdam is not my favourite city in the world but the area around the canal provides a real contrast to the cultural wasteland around the train station and the red light district. Walk along the canal, look up to appreciate the buildings, tall and thin to maximize water frontage. Enjoy an afternoon meal, pastry, or drink along the canal. Find a street vendor selling Stroopwafel or herring. This is a much more relaxed part of Amsterdam. While I would not call it the best attraction in Amsterdam, I did find it to be the one place where I could appreciate the beauty of the city.
