What once was a refreshing get-away from the tourist crowds of Amsterdam, has now become little more than a place for tourists to spread out so that it feels less crowded than some place like Dam Square. The shops are a little more interesting especially the delightful pastry/coffee shops. There is less traffic, and the tourists are spread out over a wider area, but they are tourists nonetheless. So many guides and desk clerks tout this area a being the "real" Amsterdam that it has become just another attraction with little to offer except a bit of quaintness.
