We walked here just to see it and ended up having a coffee in Starbucks while watching trains. Walk in walk out unless you need a train or a hot cup.

I really liked the architecture in the building and found a few nice pieces to take photos of. We sat on the platform for a long time due to a delay at the airport causing us to have to take a later train from Amsterdam back to Brussels. That delay had us on a Janky train late at night, we found a car with a nice lady who chatted with us to antwerp. Then we caught another train to Brussels. The downfall of that delay in Amsterdam was getting back to Brussels at 0100 instead of 2100, The local buses were not running so we had to ride a cab for an additional 40 Euro.

All the city buses come in at central station. You can get anywhere in Amsterdam from there. Buses are clean and the people are friendly. It was pretty inexpensive to buy a one day or multi day pass that saves a lot sore feet. Lots to see in amsterdam.

I have lived and worked in Amsterdam
at the station watch out for pick pockets who are looking for tourists mainly those who look a little lost ( first timers) also baggers with various reasons for wanting your money ( main excuse they want cash to get home) don't get taken in by them
you will also find young men and women asking if you have somewhere to stay these people are working for the hotels and hostels ( mainly cash in hand ) per person they take to the hotels and hostels for accommodation
don't wear to much (if any jewellery) you help the thieves by making yourself a target
tell anybody asking for money a very firm (NO) and walk away anybody approaching you will (just want a moment of your time) just to ask you something ( don't stop don't listen keep walking)
I have spent many years back and forth the the Netherlands without any problems
(use your head common sense)
and you will have a great time

I have come into Amsterdam Centraal on three different occasions, and it is always easy to navigate, well lit, and a great place to start your Amsterdam adventure. It's a beautiful building from the outside, and if you walk straight out of the front door, you will go straight onto the Damrak and into the heart of the city.
