A wonderful three storey journey through the life, influences and prolific work of a troubled mind. The beautiful development of a style evolved over a short period is respectfully told with no mention of his untimely death and that ear. Book online to fast track enormous queues.

The Van Gogh Museum is a very modern building in the center of Amsterdam with a large collection of Van Gogh works and also of other artists. Entrance costs 15 Euros for adults and free for children under 17. Audio kits cost 5 Euros. There is a good restaurant in the basement. We got tickets before going to the museum to save queuing and our entry time was 1500hrs. We went a little earlier and was not allowed in and then had to queue with everyone else who bought 3pm tickets. I would suggest arriving about 10 minutes after the entry time to avoid any queue.

A rather small museum, but with lots of works from all his periods of life and an insight into his character and progress in life. What else can someone ask?

Just keep in mind that most of his most famous works are in other museums, around the world.

(PS: hosted in Hermitage museum when we visited)

If you visit Amstedam, you have to go. You can spent all day, but with 3 hour should be enough. The museum store have a good variety of articles, and the food in the cafeteria is pretty good.

If you like Van Gogh, or the Dutch painters, you obviously must see this. Lots of great pieces.

The multimedia kit, only five euros is well worth it. Not only does it give descriptions of the paintings, it gives background, videos, even apps to try your hand at the techniques Van Gogh used. A good thing is each piece is short and you can choose what to listen to or watch. Very self-directed.

The restaurant is quite good, with freshly made dishes.

If you book ahead online, you save time by not waiting in line. But even if you have booked on line and have your ticket, you still wait in line because they only let you in at the time you have reserved, up to a half hour later.
