The Amsterdam Museum is just that - a museum telling the story of Amsterdam, from the earliest times, to the buildings of the present day. It's not a large place, so there are not masses of exhibits, but the layout is intensely confusing, with permanent exhibits interspersed with special shows. Also, because it is housed inan old building (with bits added on) there are steps everywhere, sometimes just a few, sometimes a half-flight.
If it has a special exhibition which interests you then it might be worth the 10 euro entrance fee.

“Unexpectedly fabulous”
Reviewed December 11, 2013

Ok, I generally don't like the civilization museums; they make me bored and tired after a little while. North America is filled with civilization museums that don't know what to show so they get to display ridiculous things for the sake of showing a bit of history.
This was a rant…
Anyhow, we go here and I was amazed by how much enthralling and dynamic could be the museum dedicated to a city. Fun, various, dynamic, exciting.
The DNA section is excellent for those who don't love museums. The Mondriaan exhibition is the best tool to lean the progression of the artist's view and to appreciate the late Mondriaan.
The build is entertaining per se, alone.
Finally, stop at the cafe and enjoy your lunch or coffee break: great food and very great service (the lady who served us was very nice).

Amsterdam Museum is a nice place for a visit. The museum is an architectural marvel, built cleverly and it looks beautiful, huge and overwhelmingly good. They provide information in a very entertaining manner so for those thinking history Is boring or have a problem digesting information, this is a good place to begin with as they have audio etc to present history in front of you without driving you away with boredom.

“Nice but not essential”
Reviewed November 25, 2013

I went here seeking a historical museum and that's what I got, but I was a bit underwhelmed. I preferred the maritime museum, for instance. But this is otherwise worth a stop in a convenient location. Part of the letdown was a layout that was frustrating and bewildering to the jet-lagged traveller; I'd almost given up before stumbling on the main section of the permanent exhibit after viewing an interactive timeline exhibit that seemed like a great idea but somehow missed the mark. Along with the maritime museum, helps deliver the perspective of Dutch pre-eminence in the 17th century and Amsterdam's subsequent rise to prominence. So the museum plays the role is should and garners a recommendation accordingly, but not on the list of essential-must sees for a brief stay, unless your visit centers on that section of town and your interests skew in that direction (which it well might).

“Interactive and family”
Reviewed November 20, 2013

Museum specified for families. There´re many interactive screen and displays. Better with the
Iamamsterdam card. Attraction not central area.
