My wife & I visited this Museum on March 11, 2013 and spent a good part of the day here. Well laid out and would strongly suggest spending the few more euros to secure the audio guide. The exhibits were well labeled and numbered so you couldn't mess up. What is also nice was that the explanations were in English & Dutch. Easy to get to with the Tram stop right in front of the Museum.

The entrance to the museum (now called the Amsterdam Museum) is off the main shopping street of central Amsterdam, Kalverstraat; trams 1, 2 and 5 stop nearby at the Spui stop. This is mainly a museum of the history of Amsterdam, its life and its culture; there is a lot of detail available but you can go into as much or as little depth as you like. It is informative and, like all such museums in every country in the world, tells you the story which the nation tells itself about its past. There are interesting temporary exhibitions with an Amsterdam theme. But unfortunately there are so many steps. There are some lifts, but the place is really on too many levels to make it a pleasure to visit for someone with difficulty in walking.

What a fantastic experience. And totally unexpected.
I've been to other city historical museums (Paris and others) and came away disappointed. Not this time. I highly recommend this museum. In fact, without even noticing it, we were in the museum for close to 3 hours. So much to see. And curated so well.

The exhibits are interesting. Good use of technology. Audio, visual.

Also, if you are looking for a great place for lunch, then try out the cafeteria. Absolutely first rate. Any very reasonably priced.

This museum should be part of anyone's 2 or 3 day itinerary when visiting Amsterdam

This is very good in terms of having a huge number of very interesting artefacts to see, and there is also an audio guide which was useful. However, we found the layout confusing, without any particular logic in the audio guide. I listened to some commentary thinking that I had missed the exhibits, and then found that I hadn't, but the commentary was inserted between other objects which we HAD seen. I also found that I had, in fact, missed some items. They hadn't been sufficiently well highlighted to be noticed in the vast array of other objects. Unless you have all day, you will need to be selective!
