“Very rude staff”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 29, 2012 via mobile

After spending a night at this place i was talking to the bar staff about what to do with my empty glasses that we had had to pay €1 a pièce for, when i got overed with garbage by one of the employees. I told them i found this very rude and then walked away. A few minutes later the owner came and pushed me,yelling why i had been so rude to his staff. I was completely taken aback, which man pushes a woman? Which bar owner pushes a client?

“Do not miss the Appelgebak!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 12, 2012

I read about this Cafe in a travel magazine. They warned to arrive early because the place is very small. They also said they were unfriendly to attend.
I found a friendly service, good atmosphere and a unforgettable cake. I highly recommend going there to try the apple pie Appelgebak with a spoon of whipped cream and a coffee. The best one in Amsterdam!.
I can not say if it's worth going at night ...

“One of the top 5 Brown Bars in all of Amsterdam, a must visit!!!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 9, 2012

Cafe Papeneiland is one of the most authentic, inviting, and picturesque bruine kroegs (brown bars) in all of Amsterdam. Datining back to the mid 1600's (anno 1642), you can' t get much more authentic, one step in the door and the ambiance created by the leaded glass, wood paneled walls, and Delft tiles takes you right b.ack in time. They even still have hard boiled eggs available on the bar, displayed in an ancient, ornamental egg holder. Located right on the corner of the Prinsengracht and Brouwersgrcht (canals), the views are quintesential Amsterdam. There are remnants of a secret tunnel inside one of the closets, that the popes used to use to go under the canal, across to an old Catholic church. The staff will show you if you ask to see. The bier choice is somewhat limited, but good, and if you never have, you must try one of the Van Wees jenevers they have, I suggest starting with the 3 jaar. Some folks here have complained about the service, but that is merely just Americans not used to Dutch culture, if someone hasn't been able to help you, get off yer duff and go order at the bar. The upstairs window has beautifull views, so nice to sit there during the rain especially. Terras seating is available, and a great place to just sit and watch the world go by. The Apple pie here is to die for. Papeneiland has even been visited by former president Bill Clinton, check on you tube. Also very close to the Noorderkerk (north church). Once again, a must visit!!!

“Nice old traditional cafe in nice neighbourhood - dreadful service”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 6, 2011

This little cafe is situated in one of the nices neighbourhood in Amsterdam next to many canals. During warm summer days you have the chance to sit outside in the sun next to the water. Prices are ok and the menu offers all drinks you normally get in Amsterdam. We haven't tried the food (if there is any) and were not really feeling like trying it since the service is just dreadful. Word like 'hello', 'thank you' or 'good bye' are seemingly not known to the staff. Unfriendly as I never experienced it ever before.
