“Great hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 1, 2013

Spent two nights here in early August. Hotel is in a great central location for exploring the city. Red light district is very close as well. I was a little concerned about noise from the nearby area, but the hotel is actually pretty quiet. We really enjoyed the spa, sauna, and swimming pool everyday after walking a lot. Best part of the hotel is the garden terrace in the center of the complex. It's nice to sit outside and not have to worry about people walking by while you enjoy the evening. Only complaint would be the beds are so soft you sink down into the mattress. It's a very nice hotel, but I think we would stay elsewhere on our next trip to AMS.

Just wanted to pop a quick review here. We have been coming here for our personal AND our business groups (Meeting and Event corporation - Corporate Planners Unlimited, Inc) For almost 20 years... This is where you want to be. IN FACT, we will be back there tomorrow to end our PERSONAL Vacation this year. That is the best recommendation there is.... this is where WE GO. ALWAYS EXCELLENT! TY TY!

Close to everything on a quiet canal, this hotel is the perfect location for sightseeing, shopping and restaurants. About a block from the very busy Dam Square, walking distance to the train station (if you are not dragging luggage), a bit of a hike to the Rijk but we did it in about 30 minutes. Must say we were expecting something "different" . This hotel exudes all the charm of old Amsterdam on the exterior but the rooms are funky modern with purple walls and pop art. Sort of a disconnect at first blush. Our first room was on the second floor overlooking the courtyard. Wouldn't recommend it since the restaurant in the courtyard was busy until the wee hours and the noise traveled through the windows. It was a two level room with the entrance and washroom up a short flight of stairs. Again, a bit awkward if you need to make a trip to the loo in the middle of the night. We ended up changing rooms and took a room on the top floor overlooking the canal. LOVED IT! We could open our window and watch the sun set over the rooftops or look down and do some people and boat watching on the canal. This room was all one level which was very convenient. We found a bakery on the other side of the canal on the way to Dam Square which was amazing! It had wee balcony overlooking a canal. You must try the French Toast Croissant!!

Room Tip: Ask for a room on the top floor overlooking the canal.

I need to say that it has been several years since we stayed at this hotel. Just reminiscing about it however compelled me to provide a snippet of info. To this day it is the best mattress we have ever slept on and the breakfast buffet was out of this world. The courtyard was gorgeous and the hotel was perfectly located visit the wonderful things that the area has to offer. If we ever make it back we will be sure to stay here again.

I could write a review and go on and on ... superb hotel. just perfect. I also loved the small treat for the children they gave when we arrived. You're not just in a hotel .. you're in their hands. They take care of you. Thank you sofitel.
