“Lovely hotel but a bit noisy on the lower floors”

Stayed there this week on a business conference. The hotel is lovely and the beds divine, but I found that even on the third floor the rooms on the canal side are very noisy. Great bar, but I can never understand why when a bar is packed full of (well behaved) residents that a hotel feels the need to close it. The public areas are very interesting, steeped in hostory, and the bathrooms faultless. I didn;t use the spa, so my spa rating should be ignored.

Room Tip: Request a room facing into the courtyard or on the highest floor.

My wife and I stayed at the hotel for two nights to celebrate our wedding anniversary. The staff at the hotel made us feel very welcome and helped us celebrate with a few nice surprises when we arrived. The hotel is situated at the edge of the red light district but this was no problem. The suite we stayed in was great with everything we could have needed. The breakfast is amazing, the choice available was unbelievable. The best part was the staff, they made staying in a genuine five star hotel a nice and relaxing experience rather than a stuffy one.

This is the 3rd time I stayed under the wings of the Sofitel chain, but it is the 1st time to think about using TripAdvisor to thank you the service provided by the Sofitel Legend The Grand team. Extremely wonderful customer service! The room was so chic, perfectly clean and spacious. What a great location! You deserve it!

Absolutely wonderful! the service was outstanding, so was the room, very clean and spacious. The area might not be the best, but the hotel is convenientlt located next to the Dam square. Highly recommended.

We stayed here a few weeks ago over New Years 2012. I have to say the hotel was good. Unfortunately nothing more or nothing less. I certainly expected better looking at the reviews the hotel gets on this website. We were staying for 5 nights over the new year period. Bearing that in mind the room that we were allocated was very small with only wardrobe space for one traveller over 2 days at best. We complained immediately but were only promised a different room the following day. Being unable to unpack the first night (due to lack of space and moving the next day) meant we could explore the area. This is where this hotel shines as the location is second none. Most things in Amsterdam (for a tourist) centre around the red light district and Dam Square and this hotel is right in the thick of it. Shopping? Right outside. Coffee Shop? On the doorstep. Good restaurant? Many within 5 minutes walk.
Once we moved rooms we found ourselves on the 4th floor in a much larger space(although no apology). Here we could actually unpack and put clothes away. I say this being almost apologetic for the hotel when at nearly 500 pounds a night I shouldn't be. Breakfast was included and being buffet style was good but not especially note worthy. We ate out every night so never experienced the hotel restaurant in the evening so cannot comment. The pool and gym is nice but quite small. Go at off peak times and you will enjoy.
To conclude, if you want a good hotel in one of the best locations in Amsterdam, which feels like a welcome safe haven from the madness and excesses of the city this is a good choice. Just bear in mind you will pay a lot of money for this.

We are indeed conveniently located for all our guests. Luxurious shopping areas, beautiful museums and Amsterdam’s nightlife are all within walking distance. Additionally the main convention and congress centres are easily accessible.

I would like to express my true disappointment for the experiences you had with your room. This is not according to our usual high standard of service we offer to our guests. On behalf of all Sofitel Ambassadors, I would like to apologize for these discomforts.

I hope that you give us the opportunity to prove to you that are worthy to be your first choice hotel when staying in Amsterdam.

The Grand Sofitel is in a great location and the hotel rooms have been nicely renovated. However, that is to be expected from a top hotel in a capital city. The customer service on the other hand is poor. After speaking with the Front Desk I decided to select the premium internet service for EUR 17.50 per day as it was described as very fast. The internet turned out to be very slow and when I highlighted this I had to speak to the Front desk several times and had an engineer visit my room to tell me that someone could help me tomorrow. No one apologized or offered refund the charge and when I asked the person at the Front desk had to ask someone to get it approved. In my opinion, high speed internet should be available free of charge at a hotel like the Grand Sofitel.

Needless to say don't pay for the internet at the Grand!

Also note that the Gym is tiny with 1 treadmill, 2 bikes and 1 stair master.
