We just recently spent a couple of nights at this hotel in Amsterdam - we're glad we did and enjoyed a very unique experience in a hotel that is more like a village with a variety of different services and open courtyards in the center of the village.

From the outside, although bold, it really appears at first glance as a small, boutique hotel - probably with just a few rooms, a little foyer, and perhaps a small restaurant for the patrons - NOT SO. This is a large hotel in terms of numbers of rooms, the restaurant, bar, cafe and lots and lots of open space that most of us would be envious of if it were in our backyards.

As indicated by others, the hotel is made up of a series of houses that were originally owned by merchants and others - and they all connect to one another through a maze of hallways and stairs. In fact, the hotel supplies you with a guide/hall map that allows you to find your way through various areas of the hotel.

The room we had faced out onto one of the courtyards and to one side was the side and back of a church with beautiful stained glass windows that were magnificent at night. One interesting aspect of being next to a church with chimes is that they ring, it seemed on the hour and half hour - even at night - but, for us this just added to the atmosphere of the hotel.

The service in the hotel is excellent - first class - and this occurs whether you are checking in, at the desk, at the bar or in the restaurant. I especially wanted to thank one of the folks that took our bags up to our room who made an immediate call to the front desk to change our room that wasn't quite what we were hoping for in terms of a courtyard view - it took all of 3 minutes to resolve the issue and we were then taken to another room that had the view I was mentioning above. This is a warning to those booking rooms at the hotel - make sure you ask for a courtyard view - meaning - not a view of four walls outside your window, but a courtyard.

Another thing we learned was that we didn't have to go into the main dining room to have breakfast costing 28 euros per person. Instead, there is an excellent cafe right near the elevators that can serve you a nice breakfast for about half the cost per person.

The room we had was very nicely appointed, but there were some small problems that we dealt with and really didn't spoil our stay. Air circulation is challenging - we left our window open and that solved that problem. The shower's air circulation system is lacking but by opening a port hole that connects the washroom to the bedroom, the steam has a place to go and dissipate. There is a lot of furniture in the room and the first night travelling around the room, with lights out, can be a challenge. Oh, and once you get the hang of how to turn on certain lights rather than lighting up the whole room, life in the room becomes much, much better.

The location of this hotel is excellent and their recommendations on where to go and what to do were right on the mark - at least for us.

The hotel cost a lot - but, we knew that when we made the selection and don't regret staying there - it was an excellent experience and a wonderful home away from home to stay while we were in Amsterdam

The Pulitzer is located on a major canal (the canal is literally 10 feet outside the front door of the property). The rooms are former canal houses, which means those on the upper floors are accessible by winding staircases. The rooms are not cookie-cutter American-style with modern furnishings, rather they are designed to mimic the old style elegance of the canal house period. My room was designed a bit like a ship, with a small "porthole" window allowing natural light into the shower. The WiFI was fast at about 20mb and the taxi ride from the airport cost 47 Euro. The food at the Jansz restaurant was good, although not superb. The gym is very basic and could use an upgrade, but it is fine if you want a quick workout. The staff were friendly and the location is terrific, about a 15 minute walk to Dam Square and less than five minutes to the Anne Frank house.

A lot about this hotel was good/very good. The most disappointing aspect was the wait for a room the morning we checked in. Our plane arrived into Amsterdam at 7:00 AM. When we got to the Pulitzer, we were told the official check in time was 3 PM, but might could get in earlier. We saw people begin to check out so we stayed in the lobby for hours... only eventually to be told that there were TWELVE different room types, so that those people leaving may not be vacating OUR room type. They were not! We finally got in maybe 2 PM. The realistic response at 7:30 AM should have been it is UNLIKELY we will get you in before 2 or 3PM. It almost ruined my 2 night stay.

Room Tip: Rent the night before if you are arriving at 6 or 7 AM

If you want to get an idea how staying in such a fancy canal house in Amsterdam is, try the Pulitzer Hotel. They converted a block of old fancy canal houses in one big labyrinth of a hotel. Keeping or reinstating traditional architecture and decoration. Wonderful courtyard. High end hotel with a unique experience. Highly recommended.
