I was impressed by the great restoration done in parts of this original Dutch townhouse. However, keep in mind that less of it is restored than not. We entered this museum with the Museumkaart, which costs 50 Euros and allows you entry into all the official museums in Amsterdam. We got these cards for the main museums - Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh museum, Anne Frank house. I doubt we'd have come here without the card.

We visited this museum on a rainy day when we wanted a respite from the weather. It depicts the life of a wealthy couple from 19th century Amsterdam who collected art and art objects. The collection of art doesn't seem to contain very well known artists, but the house is a fascinating glimpse into the lives of this couple. The film that runs continuously in a downstairs room provides good background on the house and its former occupants. The dining room set for dinner, a gentlemans' room, a ballroom, kitchen and a collector's room are just part of the sights and all are furnished.

This place seems more lived in than many of the old houses you can visit; I'm thinking of the big country places in England mostly. You do get a history of the families who lived there but the house is not so big that you can't imagine a family having a home there. The layout is interesting having a relatively narrow plot and there is an unusual set of extension rooms on the rear on each floor. You can even have a tea or coffee in the old kitchen (albeit from a modern machine) which is a nice touch. There's also a small, formal garden at the rear which has a strange atmosphere as it opens onto a modern city centre shopping street. If you are interested in Amsterdam history then this is a place worth finding for an hour or two. The entry is reasonable (7.50 euros).

This is an excellent example of a canal house of the wealthy from the 1600's. It is laid out just like the people lived back then. Worth the visit. Free with Museumkaart.

This impressive and beutiful decorated house, really shows how a rich art interested family could live in Amsterdam, Really worth a visit. I would recommend that you rent an audio guide, it gives some good info.
