Dam Square is pretty central and therefore very busy as it is a great jump off point for visiting other attractions. The architecture around the square itself makes for some cool photo opportunities. The war memorial was surrounded by flocks of pigeons that would perch on your arm and eat from your hand if you are in to that kind of thing... For me, the best part was the street entertainment. Alongside the standard human statues (of varying quality) that want payment for photos, there was a good selection of performers including a contortionist and a guy exciting the children by sending enormous bubble floating over their heads.
Overall, Dam Square was a fun place to wander through but I wouldn't feel inclined to spend a great deal of time there given the number of people.
