Owner description: All roads lead to Dam Square, the real heart of Amsterdam, where The Royal Palace, the Nieuwe Kerk and the War Memorial overlook this vast and bustling open space.

Dam Square is pretty central and therefore very busy as it is a great jump off point for visiting other attractions. The architecture around the square itself makes for some cool photo opportunities. The war memorial was surrounded by flocks of pigeons that would perch on your arm and eat from your hand if you are in to that kind of thing... For me, the best part was the street entertainment. Alongside the standard human statues (of varying quality) that want payment for photos, there was a good selection of performers including a contortionist and a guy exciting the children by sending enormous bubble floating over their heads.

Overall, Dam Square was a fun place to wander through but I wouldn't feel inclined to spend a great deal of time there given the number of people.

This is a great meeting point for your trip to Amsterdam. While the square itself is nothing special, the surrounding buildings make a great photo opportunity.

Ticks a must see box, but nothing too special.

This is a great anchor location for your trip to Amsterdam. While the square itself is impressive enough, it makes a great starting point to most of the places you would want to see. We stayed right on the Square, and admittedly there was a din for most of the day and into the night. We were still able to sleep, and enjoyed the energy of the area. The museum area is quieter, but as you plan where to stay, consider it in reference to how far it is from Dam Square.

On our walks around the city, we always seemed to wind up crossing through Dam Square every day. It's busy, crowded and noisy... and doubly so since there was a carnival set up there when we were there in October. We also did a walking tour one afternoon, and the meeting place at the start of the tour was at the monument in the square.

very busy area with tourists. nice to hang around for 10 minutes but it is not a must see area. be careful with the cyclists if you are crossing the roads around there. When I was there, there was a man doing magic tricks in the square and a man who just stood with a hook! Look at the picture below
