Enormous museum which is 15 minutes walk from Centraal Station or about 2 minutes on a tram to the main museum square. We went in September 2019 and paid 2 x E19 for entry and 2x E5 for multimedia. The ticketing queing is a bit haphazard but it clearly worked to get in early at 09.00 avoiding much of the early party rush. The Nightwatch was still undergoing technical study so was not clear to see. The remainder of the pictures and things were a celebration of dutch pictures and modern objects so do not expect to see much of "European Art". Pictures are well presented and it is easy to see the signature Rembrandt works. Bit of a struggle to get up to see the Bantam airoplane on the 3rd floor since the map, signs and stairs all seem to make it seem easier than it actually is to get to the right place. Allow 2 hours to go around without rushing. Whhelchair users are well catered for, though the lifts can be slow. The shop in the basement is well stocked even if it does target tourist tastes. Excellent, but not cheap so not to a Brits way of thinking, the best value for money.

Not everything is my cup of tea. The Rembrandts stand out as well as the Vermeers and the Hobbemas. We came in after 15:00 in the afternoon. Busy, but doable.

When the words "Old Masters" are used, the Rijksmuseum is where to find them. This museum celebrates the the apogee of Dutch wealth and influence, focusing on the 16th to 18th century, when wealthy Dutch traders paid local and not-so-local artists to ensure their posterity through fine art. Other eras and artists are represented as well, if not as profusely. What is great is that a visitor can stand literally nose to nose with each canvas, inspecting the brush technique, paint structure and weight, and other clues to the artist's skill. Incredible skill it is, too, with depictions of flowing sleeves, draped clothing, sharp swords and landscapes that leap from the frame. While we were there, the most famous item in the museum, Rembrandt's "The Night Watch" was being micro-scanned digitally, a process that was reported to take several months to complete. It was the only piece not available to a personal eyeball scan. If you're in Amsterdam, this is one place you must not miss.

Nice museum. One of the better ones in Europe. Buying tickets in advance might be advisable in busy seasons. Should absolutely get combo ticket with Van Goh Museum because that sells out.
