Owner description: The Rijksmuseum is the museum of the Netherlands. The completely renovated Rijksmuseum tells the story of the Netherlands from the Middle Ages to the 20th century. Including works by Rembrandt, Vermeer, Frans Hals, and more! Most famous is Rembrandt's masterpiece the Night Watch. A new display of the collection, a renewed building, new public facilities, a revamped garden and a new Asian Pavilion. Open daily from 9 am to 5 pm.

Firstly you need to appreciate that the Rijksmuseum is currently undergoing renovation. As such, only one wing of the musuem is open and is displaying a selection of their presumably vast collection. My husband and I were thankful for this, because it still took us over an hour and a half to go round the selection with our audioguides - I couldn't imagine having the patience to see the entire thing! Having free museums in Britain makes us more likely to find the prices of museums abroad expensive, but I did feel that the entry to this museum is expensive when considering that audioguides are not included in the price and are practically necessary to really understand it all. That said, the collection was very interesting and it was a great way to spend the morning hiding from the pouring rain. Skip the queue here by buying tickets/vouchers at one of the canal bus shops or from your hotel - or online as we did. We just walked straight down the fast lane and into the museum.

This museum made me impressed by Dutch art history. Lots of Rambrandt and Vermeer to see and enjoy. It is a pleasure to see world famous paintings.

The museum was designed to flow people through separate rooms with ample time and space to step back and observe. A trip to Amersterdam MUST include this. Buy tickets ahead of time on-line to avoid lines.

Everyone goes to see the same outstanding Rembrant paintings - but there is So Much More waiting to be discovered.

Doll Houses; Paintings with Nails in them; Harvest Moons; "Heads on a Platter"...

This is an outstanding museum with excellent art exhibits laid out to carefully educate the visitor. The Dutch are rightly proud of this imposing place, although it is presently undergoing extensive refurbishment and is much smaller than usual. It is still worth a detour to visit.
