Description: Smallest pancake restaurant in Europe on 2nd floor of a 16th century building. Restaurant excist already since 1961. All pancakes are made from scratch. We are famous for our homemade cream. Also many celebrities, like Anthony Bourdai, Seth Mayer and the real houswives of Beverly Hills, have taped some shows in Upstairs.

Read about the place on various blogs over the years, but never found the time to head over to that part of the City to get pancakes. After watching Bourdain's episode in Amsterdam, I put the restaurant on my to do list. Very happy I made the effort to find the place on such a cold, windy, and rainy day. The place is not so easy to find, but keep your eyes open and you will stumble upon it in no time. The restaurant is very small, so expect to wait for a seat. A piece of advise, this being Europe, dont be shy, it is perfectly acceptable to join another persons table if there are chairs available. Specifically there are 3 4top tables, and 2 2top tables in the small space. The pancakes are great, I had the typical dutch bacon with soft cooked apples. The others i was sharing a table with had ham and cheese and bananas and honey. All three of us were very pleased with our choices. The food comes relatively fast considering there is one cook preparing in a very small area, two cooking elements.

We came here for lunch and climbed the steep steep steps up to Pannenkoeken. Caution - if you're not the hardiest, suffer from vertigo or balance issues, or don't do well with heights, this might not be the place for you.

That being said, after we got up there and made a quick reservation, we sat down with the other ten diners that could fit up there. Space is at a premium - they market themselves as the smallest restaurant in Europe and I don't think they're lying. Nonetheless, it was cozy and made for a fun experience.

The menu offers a array of sweet and savory pancakes, ranging from pear and chocolate to bacon and other meats. The ingredients are as fresh as they come - the chef told us about the fresh strawberries that he secured at the farmer's market earlier that morning. It only took him less than ten minutes to fry up our pancakes, and they were outstanding. The bacon ones that I had were rich, savory, and a unique taste. My wife's Hawaiian pancake was equally fulfilling - rich, sweet and filling.

Our meals came out to 28 Euros with Cokes - a bit on the pricier side in light of what we had, but entirely worth it. Note - they only take cash. We only had to wait 10 minutes for our table - in the summer, I imagine it's a lot busier, so call ahead.

A great meal, great experience - well worth a visit when in Amsterdam.

Pancakes are a Dutch specialty, and this is the place to eat them. It's a tiny hole-in-the-wall; you ascend steep stairs to a small, cozy attic with maybe three or four tables, and some of the best food in Amsterdam. There's a wide variety of sweet and savory pancakes to choose from, and everything our party of four ordered was delicious. The ambiance of what credibly claims to be the smallest restaurant in Europe is unique, and this was easily the most memorable meal of our stay in Amsterdam. We showed up with no reservations for lunch in February; they accommodated us after a fifteen-minute wait. My guess is that reservations would be highly recommended during the tourist season.

The stairs are sooo steep so def one for able bodied people, but well worth the climb! Tiny little place (16 seats to be exact) don't underestimate how tiny it is in here, BUT this just adds to the character & the fun :) we had strawberries & homemade whipped cream pancakes & they were the best EVER! Organic pear juice was lovely too. This place is a must visit. Teapots all over the ceiling are cool to look at & really friendly staff. If you like to check out local cloture then you will love it x

Very small, very cosy. Probably only enough room for 10-12 people in this little pancake house. Good food, friendly staff. Quirky (look at the teapots on the ceiling!) reccommended.
