We enjoyed a trip on the hop on, hop off canal boats today, also known as canal busses. They have three different "lines" which take you all over central Amsterdam. The red line probably covers the most central a popular of the trips as it circles the main canal district. The boats feature almost an entire glass enclosure on the top allowing for optimum viewing space. It was rather cold on easter weekend, however it was still warm on the bus. It is about 40 minutes between the next boat if you do get off, so you have to watch the schedule closely if you plan to disembark. We just did the complete trip around the red line. There is a commentary but it is not quite as informative as hop on, hop off trips in other cities although it does give some interesting facts. It plays out in Dutch followed by English. Overall, I would recommend this for those wanting a good way to get acquainted with the city from one of the cities national treasures, it's canals.

For roughly the same price as a 1 hour canal cruise, you can buy a day ticket or 24 hour pass for the 'canal bus' which operates on three different routes stopping at 18 different popular locations. There is a multi-lingual commentary through-out and the captains are very friendly and helpful. We spent pretty much a entire day using their service and its great for either going to specific attractions you want to visit or to just relax and enjoy the sights from the canals.

We personally went for a 1 day pass at 20 Euros each rather than a 24 hour pass for 22 Euros as they only operate between 10am and about 6pm although you should check their website as times and prices may change according to the season (we went in March).

As a side note, our hotel suggested we avoid a dinner cruise on any of the other canal boats. Apparently the food is like 'airline food' and they are very, very expensive. Go for the canal boat - you won't regret it especially if you intend to visit a number of attractions along the way.

Why the best? the most flexible ( 3 routes) number of stops around the city making it easy to visit all the sights and relax in between, special winter deal fo 20 euro day ticket per person - just do it!

Go for the "canal bus company" hop on hop off service they have 3 different routes around the city and you can do all sorts of combinations round all the main sights and integrate it with walking which is the best way of all to see amsterdam, though a rest on a boat is great and gives you a different perspective. Done it previously on open topped boats in the summer and just done it in heated glass topped boats in sub-zero conditions.
I'd recommend a 24 hour ticket as good value over a day ticket €2 extra to travel on 2 different days though only €6 extra for 48 hours. There is a nice low key commentary in the background which is fairly easy to tune out if you have travelled a section previously, though gives you a comfortable reassurance of your location if you are already used to it
