Description: Brasserie Reflet right on Amsterdam’s Dam Square is officially a National Monument, and not many restaurants can make that claim. Opened in 1885, timeless Reflet has perfect Belle Epoque decor that will transport you back to that highly decorative age. There are soaring ceilings, ornate mouldings and carvings, fluted columns, luxurious drapery and all done in shades of cream and gold and terracotta. The modern menu has its roots in fine Burgundian cooking, including dishes like tempura of smoked eel with potato salad and lemon creme fraiche, main course of trio of veal, or speciality like Chateaubriand for two, and dessert of classic Crêpes Suzette made tableside. There are daily and Taste the Season menus, and the solid wine list includes ten by the glass. Reflet’s delightful surroundings accommodate up to 60 in groups, and we are sure the central location, historic ambience, lovely surroundings and association with the Grand Hotel Krasnapolsky and all its facilities (including hard-to-find car parking) would make this a popular choice for successful gatherings.

“A Romantic dinner for two.....”
Reviewed February 24, 2012

Having wandered about Amsterdam central areas in the rain, just for the fun of it, my wife and I decided to seek out somewhere for a nice little dinner for two. We poked our noses into the menus of a number of establishments around Dam Square until we found something we could both agree on.

Reflet is dinning from a bygone era. The room could easily have been brought from a period drama of the 18th century with mouldings, mirrors, soft furnishing, crisp linen and spotless glassware. We were greeted at the door by the head waiter/sommelier who took our coats and politely escorted us to a nice well laid table.

We spent some time mulling over the menu but in the end we opted for the 5 course surprise and left the decision to the Chef. What followed was sheer joy!

Having chosen the wine with the help of the Sommelier we were offered, in the way of an amuse bouche, a little rolled tuna on a skewer. Very tasty. The courses, thereafter, arrived at just perfect intervals. We began with a little chopped veal wrapped in a thin crisp sourdough jacket and topped with a fried quails egg - my wife was little upset by the raw nature of the dish (more for me ;-)). This was followed by a a pair of perfectly cooked scallops atop a piece of fried black pudding, served with a swirl of creamed cauliflower and a light drizzle of bisque. The next dish, delivered by the Chef himself, was a very fine souffle dressed with cheese and truffle and laid amidst a dandelion salad, the aroma alone had us both heady with anticipation. The fourth course, the main course I suppose, consisted of duck leg laid upon a bed of lentil, cooked to perfection. Finally, I opted for the cheese selection and my wife opted for desert - 3 different coffee flavoured sweet dishes.

All in all a lovely evening with very fine food. Heartily recommended.
