“Great place - not for three people”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 20, 2014

Citizen M is a great place if you need to stay near the Schiphol airport. Tiny rooms accommodate only one king sized bed. They are clean and well kept. Somehow we weren't able to determine that three people in this room would have been impossible, so we ended up rending a second room for our teenaged daughter at the last minute. Not a good surprise, but better than staying at the Hilton or Sheraton on the Airport grounds.

The food is good, they have a great place to hang out (since the rooms are so small), and the movies are all free. Walking distance to car rentals and terminals. If you want to stay at the airport, this is the place!

Room Tip: All the rooms are exactly the same.

This is really a different kind of hotel compared to the traditional.

You have a self check-in, but there always someone to help. Friendly staff.

Rooms:
- Comfortable king bed, wall-to wall
- TV with free movies & entertainment system
- all lighting & electrics in the room are managed by a tablet, you can also set some mood lights in multiple colors.
- the bath room is a bit funny, as it's in inside a cilinder in your room, but it's ok
- you don't really have a desk (just a very small table), so if you intend to work late hours, you'll have to do it from your bed.

Overall, I like the hotel. But I'm still more a fan of a traditional hotel with an actual desk when travelling for business. When traveling non-business, I would really consider this hotel, because it's a great value for money!

Stayed here for 1 night and was perfect for what we needed - a cheap, fairly central hotel !
Agree with previous reviewers that the bathroom situation means that the rooms are more suited for couples rather than friends / colleagues...
The bed was really comfy, had a great night's sleep and found the staff to be very friendly and helpful when we arrived, and they let us leave our luggage with them all day after we'd checked out.
Overall very interesting concept, very different from other hotels I've stayed in and would probably stay in one again in another city but not for any longer than a few nights...

Note that this hotel is a little outside of the main area...but it is easy to take a little tram or even walk to the downtown areas. On the other hand, it is VERY convenient to the airport--just a quick train ride in quick walking distance from the hotel.

Staff was so very nice, food was good, room was small but very functional and comfortable. Fun modern feel to the whole place.

Lovely modern hotel just outside the airport but soundproof. Super comfortable huge bed with lots of pillows.

Easy to take the train from the airport to the central Amsterdam station or you can take the tram to Dam square.

Second time here and fantastic for a quick day or two stop over before a next flight.

Wow, minimalist, design, affordable and near the RAI if you're there for a conference. I've never been one to enjoy anything design and 'for play' in the room and have to admit the minimalist style of the toom combined with the funky lights and almost 'get together' atmosphere in the lobby was great. If I go back to the city for business, this is where I will stay.

Are you traveling with a lot of bags? Are you savvy enough that you do not have to eat every meal out at a restaurant or in a hotel lobby with its inflated prices? Do you value some kind of sound (or smell) barrier between your toilet and the place where you sleep?

If you answered "yes" to any of these questions, CitizenM in Amsterdam Zuid is not for you!

We lived in Amsterdam for two years and stayed in this hotel for a couple of nights after moving out of our apartment. We had a lot of bags with us (we were moving), which was a problem in what was the smallest hotel room we have ever seen.

Ok, so it has won some awards for "efficiency." Ok, so there is some funky remote control that is impossible to navigate and which turns your little alcove of a room into a swank-ily lit bachelor pad. But there is no excuse for having to smell your toilet from your sleeping place, or for having to walk through a wet floor after you shower because your shower floor is the same floor you must walk on to get from your bed to your exit door.

I won't even go into the fact that both elevators were broken when we visited. . . (remember all those bags? Not fun!)

The kicker for us was that we were not allowed to eat our own food in the common areas of the building. The concept of efficient rooms is partly to transfer one's living space from the private room to the "social" lobby area. We purchased salads from the nearby Albert Heijn (grocery store) and chose to eat them in the lobby (away from the food sales area of the lobby, so as not to be flippant). because there was only one chair in our hotel room (unless we were supposed to use the toilet as a chair?) We were asked to either leave the lobby or discard our food because it was not CitizenM food.

We have stayed in a LOT of hotels in a LOT of cities across Europe (25 countries and counting. . .) I hate giving bad reviews, but this one is certainly earned. We will not return.
