“Houseboat experience”
Reviewed December 30, 2013

It takes about 10 minutes to walk from central station to the harbour where the boat moors. There is no pub or "coffee shop" nearby hence you can enjoy the tranquility at night. The boat is not large, nonetheless it stays stable even in the cruelest wind from the Arctic Ocean. The staffs were very kind and helpful, and the quality of breakfast was definitely beyond what you could have expected from a hostel.

As for the disadvantages, the twin room we have stayed was rather small and basic, the walls were thin and there were merely two toilets and bathrooms (one for male, another for female, with limited availability) for all the guests, and finally, just like any other hostel, the wifi was unsatisfying.

Overall, the pros outweigh the cons considering Vita Nova is not a luxurious cruise but an economic houseboat hostel.

Good central location but very poor service. Rooms are very small and basic with bunk beds but it's a houseboat so it's ok you wouldn't expect anything more, but it's the people who are running the place who made our stay rather an unpleasant experience. Cutting long story short- we were driving from london and stuck in traffic so we thought we might be little late,we couldnt get through to the hotel( they wouldnt pick up the phone) so we called booking.com to let them know about possible late arrival, they also couldnt get through so they gave us owners mobile number so we called... ( on arrival we were told how UPSET they are that we were given they private number by bookin.com!!!)
At the end we got there on time( although it wasnt easy as there were many boats there and as the owner explained to us plate with the hotel name was stolen few days ago and wasnt yet replaced ( so if we did not get their priv nr I dont think we would get there on time)
In general couple running the place really made an impression of just being fed up with the job and not intrested in being at least polite. Plus the room we got was just under the stairs( only stairs leading downstairs) so very loud, you could hear people going up and down all night. Duvets were so short I had to choose if I would rather have my feet or arms covered ;) plus we had to put bed sheets on our own.

If you like to stay in a hotelboat shop around! Following night we stayed in a lovely hotelboat 200m from VitaNova- in Angelina: it was cheaper, with en-suite, no bunk beds, pretty decor and briliant hosts.

This place for an interesting time in Amsterdam. Awesome location, easy to walk too. Rooms are super small, but it is a houseboat. Two nights there is a good amount of time, showers are so small, but everything was clean. Owner Roy is a nice guy. Free Wifi on the main deck and a great breakfast! Price seemed a little high, but Amsterdam is expensive. Would recommend if you want the houseboat adventure.

It was really interesting to get to our hotel and see it was a boat. Didn't know it when I made the reservation. Got to our room and it was a bunk bed. Needless to say my girlfriend and I had a laugh. Service was good. They didn't take credit but he let us pay cash whenever we could. Breakfast was included. Only complaint is it was impossible for us to find. Even the cab didnt know how to get there. Otherwise, it was awesome!

This is a really good place to stay while exploring what Amsterdam has to offer. We stayed as a couple in a small room but very clean the (boat)el) comes with friendly staff and easy to access rooms at any times.
Great value you for short stays definitely would stay again.

It is a unique experience, staying overnight in a very small and tiny place. Not good for the claustrophobic. Two beds, but separate. If you are a couple, no possibility to sleep in the same bed. Good for single traveler with great possibility to have discussion with other fellow passengers.

If you are looking for an original accomodation, the Vita Nova boat is the place to be in Amsterdam ! It's a simple boat with tiny cabins but so authentic. It was a pleasure to lodge there. Old cabin but clean (all the same with a tiny cupboard and a sink !). Share "bathroom" (in reality, just a tiny shower) but it's not a problem (very old but clean). Free wifi. Good breakfast. Very pleasant owners who trust in their clientele... For example, if you want to have a drink, you serve yourself and you put money in a little box. Great ! You can also relax on the outside deck, have a drink,... The price is really attractive and the boat is located at 10 minutes (by foot) to the main station of Amsterdam. There is on this boat a very friendly atmosphere and we really appreciate it. In conclusion, a very good alternative if you don't want to spend a lot of money or if you want to feel like a real sailor in Amsterdam !
