“Lovely guest house, nice quiet location”
Reviewed February 22, 2011

This is a really lovely place. It’s situated on the north side of the Amstel Canal and only a short walk from the main streets leading up to Dam Square. However, where the guest house is situated itself is very quiet. Also, Rembrandt Square is close by on the other side of the canal, with lots of bars and restaurants. There is also a flea market round the corner from the guest house – selling all sorts of things (think it isn’t open on Sundays but every other day it seemed to be).

We stayed in the Family Suite (on the ground floor), there is a canal view from this room but I’d imagine it’s a lot better on the 1st floor (hence it’s name the ‘canal view room’). The family suite has a nice size double bedroom cornered off by big sliding doors –which lead on to the large living area with flat screen TV. There is also a computer in the room with internet access (very useful). There is an extra (single) bed in here also, if needed.

The closet space is huge (lots of shelving and cupboards behind the main bedroom with hangers provided).

The kitchen is good (the oven can’t be used as it’s full of cleaning stuff – we didn’t need to use it anyway). There is a big fridge that has your yoghurts/cheese/ham/butter/little milk sachets/jam/fresh orange juice in for your breakfasts, replaced daily if you use them up.

There is a really good coffee machine (with lots of sachets of the coffee provided), a toaster, microwave and kettle (with an array of tea bags including breakfast tea, green tea and earl grey).

The toilet/shower room is attached to the kitchen, which isn’t really a problem but be careful stepping in and out of the bathroom as the floor gets soaked and there’s quite a big step/ledge into the bathroom. Shower was a bit dodgy (with a bit of a leak) but the water nice and hot every time we used it. Small and large towels are also provided.

Lots of mirrors around and two large dressing tables with lots of plug sockets makes getting ready to go out easy!

We didn’t find the neighbours noisy until Monday morning when they may have been getting children ready for school, but even then they weren’t very loud. Also, you don’t tend to see the other guests unless you have to pass in your corridor. We didn’t get to meet Ken but his friend who showed us round and cleaned our room was nice.

I’d definitely stay here again, good price for a great place and close to everything you need.

The location is very close to the main attractions of the city. However, the location is very quiet with no traffic. Staff is helpful and flexible. We traveled with four adults and a baby and had stayed in the deluxe and family rooms. Both of the rooms are large, beautifully decorated and well cleaned. Both rooms have nice view, especially the deluxe room in second floor has a nice view to the canal with boats. Note, the third room does not have windows to the canal. We enjoyed helping ourselves for making breakfast: plenty of bread , ham, cheese, and fruits was offered for this purpose. There was also nice espresso machine for making coffee.

This is probably the best quest house I have ever stayed. Still, you should note that this is a quest house - not a hotel.

Beware this is a guest house, not a hotel. Two rooms and not safe. We stayed for two nights, nice location but there was party next door so we couldn't get asleep. Front door was always unlocked. It says there's a continental breakfast, but this is misleading information you have to prepear yourself in your room and very poor breakfast in addition.
The room hasn't got a window and the bathroom really smelling very bad.
They only accept cash. So it does not worth what you pay...

The Amstel Canal Guest House is located right in the heart of the city on the Amstel River and is run by an amazing host - Ken. We visited Amsterdam in July and thank our lucky stars we chose to stay at the Amstel Canal Guest House. We had hoped for a romantic get-away and Ken went out of his way to make sure we had this. Ken gave us a full run down on the best places to see and where to go and was very communicative both during our stay and also via emails prior to our trip over. I had read a lot of reviews prior to booking and took the advice of fellow travellers about upgrading to the canal suite and my GOD! It was worth every cent! We arrived early in the morning and even though this was earlier than check in times, Ken our host made us feel very welcome and allowed us early into our suite. The suite was just amazing with a stunning 3 window view of the Amstel River and being so centrally located that we could walk anywhere or get straight on a tram. Our suite also had its own tiny kitchenette with a first class coffee machine and our own dressing/changing room with a tiny bathroom. While the bathroom was tiny, this did not in ANY way detract from the elegance of the guest house or our experience. Bathrooms simply are tiny. Our room was very tastefully decorated and our host Ken very knowledgeable about where to go and what to see. Ken also offered us a new service of taking us about in a small boat run by a friend. If this is offered to you... TAKE IT! In Amsterdam you can hop on a tour boat for a canal ride crammed in like sardines for about 12 euros per person. Ken's boat ride cost 15 euros each for an hour and we were able to lie down (yes, lie down!!) in amazing comfort with a rug, pillows, snacks, wine and some wonderful tunes playing... all organised by Ken. It was such an amazing and romantic ride and my partner took full advantage of this romantic setting and even proposed to me on the boat. I don't know who was more excited... me or Ken!! He even took photos for the full hour and even got a shot of my lovely fiancee proposing to me... something I will treasure forever. This place is seriously a place you want to stay! Ken even made us a first class 4 course dinner (at no charge) because we got rained in one night. How can you even consider somewhere else after reading that?! We will definitely be coming back!

The front room with the windows has a BEAUTIFUL view of Amstel Canal--amazing. Room is very clean and comfortable, and location is great. Ken and Alain, the owners, live downstairs and were very nice. We paid an extra 50 euro and got a very pleasant boat ride around Amsterdam on their private boat.

Downsides: Bathroom is across the shared hall, and the shower is such that it is impossible to take a shower without getting the entire bathroom wet. Also, did not receive breakfast on any of the mornings we were there, despite being told that it was part of the package.

Overall, I would heartily recommend this guesthouse if you are a young person/couple, flexible in your ways and want to enjoy Amsterdam as the locals do. (NB: not good for couples with young children, given the v. steep staircase).

I stayed in the "second" room Ken offers, as his main room was booked.
This room is very very small, uncomfortably so for two people and luggage, and has sole window on an air shaft, big enough only to serve to hear the neighbors children and mother yelling at each other in the early morning. Which is probably good, as otherwise it might be hard to wake up in this lightless room. The room is also dimly lit.
It is impossible to get into the bathroom without carefully folding the shower doors closed, like origami, which first requires rotating the shower spigot one way then the other to close the doors. The "breakfast delivered to your room daily" translates to a package of sliced ham and one of cheese in the mini-bar the night before.

All in all, this room would be perfectly fine for some, if its smallness and lack of light and air were explicitly pointed out. As is, it is not a room one wants to spend time in more than needed, which means when visiting somewhere like amsterdam that one is on ones feet all day without the possibility of coming back to the room and relaxing comfortably before going out again.

If Ken described and priced this accurately, it would be a perfectly acceptable alternative for some. But to land here without expecting it can be a vacation killer. I gave Ken my feedback and chance to address my concerns, as I want to be fair, but heard nothing back.

To his credit, Ken seems like a nice guy, the personal touches and furnishings of the room are fine, and his canal-view room seems great. He has just pushed the envelope in trying to make his small back room pay out at travelers' expense.
