Best Western Plus Hotel Blue Square
Ranked #166 of 371 Hotels in Amsterdam
Reviewed July 6, 2010

I stayed at the blue square for the weekend with friends. The hotel was lovely and clean. The room was good, however the view was of nothing but we were not in the room for very long we were just pleased there was 3 beds and a shower! The cleaning staff seemed a little lazy as we had to ask for more milk in the rooms and an extra cup on a couple of days - nothing really bad tho!! But overall hotel was good, comfortable and helpful.

There isnt much around the hotel area, a few shops and cafes but the shops in the little shopping centre have strange opening times so check b4 you set out to look round them.

To get to the Amsterdam city centre you can catch the bus or tram. You can catch the number 21 bus or tram 14. It is really easy and I didn't have to wait much more 3 mins for a bus/tram. Get a travel pass - easier and cheaper, rather than having to pay for a single trip each time.

Few suggestions of things to see and do - Anne Frank house -excellent. Boat cruise - interesting and relaxing. Pub crawl - get to see red light district. Sex museum - very funny

The hotel is very clean staff are very friendly the only problem is the location especially at night it could feel a little intimidating, the tutankhamun restaurant over the road from the hotel was very nice if you like turkish food the 14 and 7 tram take you into amsterdam and take about 20 minutes there are also a couple of buses my advice is to get the train from schipol to central station then get the number 64 bus to slotermeer. it is a good hotel on a budget but the travel costs maybe mean the euros you save staying here might be better spent staying central amsterdam, is the most expensive city i have stayed in, in europe

We booked this hotel with our airline/credit card points and it was beautiful! It definitely is a 4 star hotel. The staff is so nice and helpful, and they are proficient in English. The rooms are average in size, but are decorated very nicely. The breakfast buffet is awesome - one of the best I've seen in Europe, so if you're wondering about that, it's probably worth it. The location is a bit far, but it's one tram ride into Dam Square (22-25 minutes), and you catch the tram down the road. There are also night buses that the hotel can help you with if you want to stay out late. It's no problem to transport to and from the hotel. You can also take a bus like the website says from the main station to get there, as if you are arriving from the central station, you'd have to take 2 trams to get to the hotel. Take the bus if you have luggage. If not, you could walk up to Dam square and do only 1 tram. Free wi-fi all around the hotel. It was great!!

The place is clean and roomy but the restaurant is not vegetarian friendly. Management assumes that all guest either drink coffee or green tea and make no provision for people like me who want their cuppa first thing in the morning - not even after calling the reception and requesting breakfast tea bags to be sent to the room!!

This hotel is a bit out of the way, but if you get bus/tram passes you can save money on transportation. The rooms are large and the bathrooms huge!! The staff is friendly, speak perfect English and can answer every question you have without hesitation!!

Totally recommend if you are on a budget!!

Great hotel, friendly and helpful staff, fantastically big rooms, clean, well equipped, fabulous shower, incredibly comfy and enormous double bed.....views from the room lovely (canal one side and lake the other), very quiet and peaceful surroundings. Would I stay again? absolutely! Yes it is a little out of town but the trams stop two mins up the street and the staff will give you a map with a list of which trams and buses go where, they run very regularly so you never have to wait long. Get a chip card from tourist information which will give you unlimited travel for 24, 48 hours or however long you want and then you just swipe it when you get on (and off) the tram or bus.
I will definitely stay here again when we visit next, much better than those pokey expensive hotels in town!!

We stayed here as part of a Contiki tour - the rooms were very good, with excellent bathrooms, free wi-fi, and good range of TV channels. The restaurant buffet was basic, but good - both dinner and breakfast.

This hotel is a 20 minute tram ride from the centre of town, so it's probably not suited for city breaks or romantic getaways, and in fact it seemed to have a number of other large tour groups there as well.

There were a few bars across the road, but no real nightlife to speak of in the local vicinity. Overall we were happy with the quality and standard of this hotel and it's facilities, though as I mentioned it's quite far out of the city so that's something to consider.
