The experience at the Novotel in Amsterdam can be a mixed bag, so choose with care. As a Novotel, it has all the characteristics of a the chain – fairly efficient, but rather drab, not very pleasantly gray; standard rooms – if someone is used to a better category or chain, then these hotels are a downer.

As for location, this is well outside the touristy side of Amsterdam, but fairly near the new business district. The airport is about 20 minutes away by car. It takes a while in a cab or a tram to get the Centrum, and you can’t really just walk to the office area either. Tram number 4 starts just a few metres from the hotel, and ends in Cental Station, so very convenient. But it is in front of a large park, Amsterdam Bos, and a beautiful wide street. Amsterdam of course is fairly easy to navigate, but factor in your requirements before selecting this hotel.

I stayed in a superior room, and it was okay, but absolutely no frills. Not only were there no basic such as slippers, toiletries, an iron etc, the aesthetics of the room were not welcoming. Rather depressing if one had to stay in the room. There was a tea maker, a TV with basic channels, a small desk.

The bathroom is really poorly designed. Small, the bath is really high to get into and there is actually a note on in the bathroom that requests you to “shower in the bathtub”. Till now it had never struck me take it outside, but in this bathroom, I discovered it was actually easy to do so! A big plus was free wi-fi in the hotel, which compensated.

The common areas are much better. It is a big hotel – 610 rooms, plus a convention centre. So expect occasional noisy days, but then the reception area is quite nice - spacious, well lit, nice seating arrangements, a lovely coffee kiosk. The colour scheme is also such a welcome relief from the room / corridor drabness – white with touches of bright green with dark shades of sofas. There are some nice design touches, in the lobby area, and the washroom labels outside the restaurant.

The coffee shop/ all day diner is quite good. The buffet has a decent range, actually extensive, choices, and lots of spacious seating area. There is an east Asian restaurant too, which I didn’t try though.

The check in is fast, though of course there is no one to help you. Somehow as Indians, we expect it! Didn’t check out the gym, and there is no pool. There is parking, but fairly expensive. Staff ok, obviously some better than others! There is a souvenier shop, which can help you with emergency retail.

Room Tip: Opt for the Executive Room, it gets you slippers and toiletries! Not to speak of a view, especially if you get a front facing one.

Dear Sir,

Thank you for taking the time to tell us and other travelers about your recent experience at the Novotel Amsterdam City.

Your detailed review will help other travelers to determine where to stay in our lovely city and it also gives us the opportunity to complement the information where possible.

Novotel is a standardized product with efficient hotel rooms for as well as the business traveller as the leisure guest. The location of the hotel is not only nearby the business district of the Zuidas and the RAI Convention Centre (7 min. by foot) but also close to direct public transportation means into the city centre (3 min. by foot). The airport is only two stops by train (10 min).

At Novotel Amsterdam City we offer different types of rooms; standard, executive and executive deluxe rooms. The amenities provided in each room category depends on the type booked. As you stayed in a standard room no slippers, bathrobe or iron and iron board are commonly provided. It is available, sometimes with a small surcharge, upon request. When you prefer these items to be in your room, it might be interesting to book an executive room instead.

I am sorry to read that you have mixed feelings about the different approach of our employees. If this has lead to discomfort I sincerely apologize for the inconvenience caused. We strive to provide a superior service experience for every customer. We therefore appreciate you shared your concerns, and it is our hope that you will give us the opportunity to better serve you in the near future.

With kind regards,

Remco Groenhuyzen

Stayed at this hotel for a couple of nights in April. Upon arrival we found a large car park with plenty of spaces. The check in was efficient although I did feel that the staff were more efficient than friendly. The bedroom was of a very good standard. We ate lunch on the first day in the restaurant and the service and food was good. We didnt eat again in the hotel as breakfast looked somewhat pricey and there if so much choice in Amsterdam city centre. We drank in the bar both evenings and we were unimpressed with the service on the second evening when both bar staff were making up a couple of cocktails for a guest whilst keeping other guests waiting, they didnt even acknowledge that people were waiting. During the second night there was some noise around the hotel with people partying in to the early hours, I know that the hotel cant totally control this however it is one of the dangers of such a large hotel. I must say we thought the hotel was in a good location only being a short walk from the tram, but there is little nearby and this may be an issue for some travellers. All in all the hotel felt quite impersonal and so maybe we would think twice about staying again.

Check in and check out were a breeze. Staff were friendly, helpful and well-trained in dealing with guests. Rooms were clean and well-maintained. Didn't encounter any problems whatsoever in this hotel. It is situated outside the city center, but this we didn't mind because the tram station was only a couple of minutes away by foot. Overall, an enjoyable and comfortable stay.

A good example of this hotel chain, all the facilities were of a good standard and the staff friendly, in particular Reception who helped us out by sorting an issue we had which was not hotel related. This hotel is situated in the Business district of Amsterdam, so whilst we travelled there by car we did not become involved in driving in the city which
can be a nightmare. 2oo yards from the hotel you can catch the number 4 tram which takes you to the Central station, you return from here and get off at the last station and you are back where you started. Tram is very fast.

Excellent price value. Recommended eyes close. Breakfast included , multiple choices for breakfast. Friendly staff. Only drawback outside city centre. Room was nice a tidy, shower maybe small. Single beds to narrow if you are looking for good night sleep go for double bed .
