“You haven't visited the Netherlands until you've visited Alkmaar”
Reviewed September 13, 2013

I was lucky enough to visit the Alkmaar cheese market on its last day and it was definitely my highlight. It portrays the essence of traditional Holland and was a like a dream come true as I had seen photos of it whilst growing up. Obviously there are now modern ways of transporting cheese but I loved how they showcased their countries history. The village itself is absolutely delightful with its boutiques and cafes which made for an incredibly enjoyable morning- who can say no to free cheese samples and watching a clog being miraculously constructed right before their eyes!

“Enjoy the inspection of the cheeses and then visit the town”
Reviewed September 1, 2013

Every Friday morning (from spring to fall), the cheese market is held on the historic square in Alkmaar. The re enactment shows how cheeses were carried in a traditional way and inspected before they are sold off. It is a popular attraction and important to come early to get a space close to the front to see the action. After the market we loved walking around the beautiful old town of Alkmaar with it's very cute store fronts, canals and cafes. It's an easy walk from the train station to the center of town.

“Spectacular”
Reviewed September 1, 2013

The entire performance is very enjoyable, with commentary in 4 languages to let the crowds know what is happening. The guys transporting the cheeses certainly do earn their money!

“There is more to life than Gouda”
Reviewed August 20, 2013

Gouda
This place cannot handle the crowds. Though the concept of an old fashioned cheese market is fun-especially for someone from Wisconsin, this was a major disappointment. Without the aid of the projections on a wall, you cannot see a thing-and I am six feet tall! Do not go for the cheese market, but do visit the town. Alkmaar is very pretty; interesting architecture, beautiful churches-we were fortunate enough to attend and organ recital at St. Lawrence, great restaurants, beautiful canals and the cutest little red light district. It was very interesting to stumble upon a picturesque street where the buildings were decorated with red geraniums. We walked down to see what this enchanting little street offered. Only after we passed a few store fronts - that were very discreet, did we notice the red-lights. Maybe it was subdued for the family oriented cheese market, but still very interesting as an alternative tourist destination. I would have been happier not to have stumbled upon this street and got to see the cheese market.

So don't bother going for the cheese market.

“Have fun in the cheese market”
Reviewed August 7, 2013

It was a lovely experience to come across this pretty square and find out the traditional cheese market being done the same way it used to be hundreds of years ago. It is really fun to watch the guys carry lots of big yellow round cheese up and down the square!
It was a bit crowded, though. But it certainly is worth a visit. Besides, you can check the Kaasmuseum (Cheese museum) and then buy and try out lots of cheese on the streets surrounding the square.
