The Alkmaar cheese market was on my list of things to do while visiting Europe. I made a day trip out of it from Belgium. Although a long drive I also wanted to see the Tulip Fields. The market was very busy but well worth the trip, the town is lovely. Recommend visiting the cheese museum during the market offers the best view in my opinion as the windows open up to it. Great pictures from there although you can't hear the announcer.

Even though quite obviously a tourist event, it is lot's of fun. Costumed volunteers (and probably some paid people) gather round cheese blocks, lay them out on the town square, "auction them off to the highest bidder, weigh the merchandise, then move them to the Weighhouse. Lots of pageantry. Announced by a rather annoying but very informative master of ceremonies. Bells tinkle in the background. There are stalls where they sell chees and trinkets. You can spend a few hours here. The town is very nice.

We went to Alkmaar for the cheese market slightly concerned because of a negative review about not being able to see because of big crowds. We were pleasantly surprised. Once some people had moved off it was possible to get a ringside view, and it was all enormous fun! We went round the back of the weigh house to see how the weighing was done, and there were numerous stalls selling not only cheeses - but also mackerel rolls, mini pancakes, etc. There was a cheese museum and very good gift shop. All in all, a thoroughly good morning out. We found a lovely coffee shop called Echt in a street leading off the square. Highly recommended.

The Cheese market runs on Fridays 10-12 but if you want a good view get there early as it is very busy. There are some reserved seats for children and elderly. Once the event has finished you can always go in the cheese museum or take a boat trip only 5 euros but watch out the bridges are very very low and you need to bend down.

We booked a tour with our 3 grandchildren to see the Alkmaar Cheese Market in May 2013. We had been there 20 years ago and expected our family to enjoy this unique and colorful experience. We were extremely disappointed. The crowds were 5 people deep around the barricades and with great effort, we were able to position the children to see for a few minutes. The streets were also so crowded that walking was no pleasure. Our tour assumed one could eat lunch while at Alkmaar but it was too rushed and unpleasant. I am sad to report that I would no recommend this event for adults or children.
