When visiting Den Bosch, this is one of the attractions not to be missed.
The Binnen Dieze is part of the old canals through the city of Den Bosch. In the past, water flowed in through the city walls and exited the city on the other side, This water was vital for the survival of the city in the past centuries. Amoung other things, it served as a transport means for all traders inside the city and provided fresh drinking water (how ever clean it was).
Untill the end of the seventies, it even still functioned as the cities sewer system. But due to environmental laws (thank God), a modern underground sewer system was installed and the old canals now only function for the control of the ground water levels and as a touristic attraction.
The canal tours are organized by the tourist office, but are run by elderly volunteers. All boats are powered by silent electric motors. The tour gives a view on the city from a totally different perspective, one that one never woud have expected to exist.
Definitely a must do!!
