“Beautiful, no climb to the top today”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 5, 2014

Finally visited this beautiful church after being in Breda for several times. The church is a very nice visit worth. Entrance is free. Unfortunately you can only climb to the top on thursday an saturday, i believe both after 13:00 and on some sundays in the summer months. I'll come back to do that one day.

“Large Gothic Church with long historic connection to House of Nassau”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 18, 2014

The Grote Kerk (Large Church) or Onze-Lieve-Vrouwekerk (Church of Our Lady) is in the centre of the old part of town. The church was originally a Catholic church turned Protestant in the 17th century, like so many churches in The Netherlands.

The outside is impressive with a tall tower that can be seen from afar. The interior like all Protestant churches has sober decorations.

There is free admission but a donation of €1 (or more) is suggested.

The church is very much linked to the House of Nassau which delivered William of Orange who started the liberation of The Netherlands from Spanish Rule in the 16th century

The Prince’s chapel in the church is the old mausoleum of the House of Orange-Nassau, ancestors of the present Dutch Royal Family. Seventeen family members are buried in this chapel.

William of Orange and other family members of the House of Orange-Nassau are buried in the New Church in Delft.

“living the history”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 25, 2013

The church has not only a great architecture, but it embeds so much history... every step you make inside the church is a journey in time, to unknown moments of glory, or sadness, or dispare.

“Most beautifull church in Holland”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 25, 2013 via mobile

I visited this church several times, last time during Cultural Night in Breda with beautifull performances and light shows, climbing the steps and watching the few over the city, the church bells during the day times are like music

“Breda - Gothic church”

One of the most beautiful gothic churches in The Netherlands.
From the tower you have a very nice view over the city.
