Bilderberg Hotel De Bovenste Molen
Ranked #2 of 7 Hotels in Venlo
Reviewed February 17, 2013

Since my first visit to this hotel in 1988 and several visits after that, this hotel changed a lot. It still is a member of the Bilderberg Group but no so luxurious anymore.
Our standard room had a good size, a flatscreenTV, no coffee/tea facilities, 2 armchairs, small desk, wardrobe, coat hooks and a convenient bathroom with free washgel and enough towels. Elderly or disabled persons can have problems with stepping in/out of the bathtub. No separate shower.
Since wifi is so common these days I find it incorrect that you have to pay for this in a 4 star hotel.
In my opinion, you can see the skills of the Chef in his recommanded 3 course meal. Well, for me this was a bit disappointing. The food overal was too salty. The meat was too dry, dessert too sweet and a bit dull. I think the many cooking shows on TV are making people more familiar with all sorts of ingredients and recipes so people expect a certain standard when dining out. Our meal had not that special twist that makes diner a (small) private party. Because I was disappointed I was offered a free after meal tea.
The Staff in the whole hotel have been very welcoming and courteous.
When you love nature then put on your walkingshoes. It’s possible to make short and long walks starting from the hotel. For us this is the main reason to come back another time.
(Although there is a railroad close by, we did not hear it at all.)

Room Tip: A standard room is ok if you bear in mind that you just use it for sleeping. For a longer stay I wou...

At first site, beautiful location and smooth check-in and then it went bad. The service in the restaurant, although good when attentive, although not very attentive and slow. Traveling alone on business normally does not called for a long leisure dinner, but dinner took an hour and forty- five minutes. Having to ask for check twice just to make the agony end. Second night tried to eat in the lounge area for hopefully a quick bite, took 45 minutes to get an ice tea and another 10 to get a menu. And oh yeah, my room was not serviced...not likely to go back.

I have just spent a week in this lovely Hotel on the outskirts of Venlo. The setting is lovely and the rooms very comfortable. The property is a 20 minute walk into Venlo or a few minutes in a taxi.
The staff are very professional and friendly. While i was part of a Congress being held at the property I think the service level was the same for all guests. The breakfasts and meals were very well done. Highly recommend this property.

I recently stayed in this Hotel for two nights as part of a trip to see the Floriade exhibition, which was only 15 minutes away about 10km. The lady on reception was very professional and very good was able to answer all my questions.

The room was a good size, very clean and the bed was brilliant very comfortable would loved to have taken it home. Plus both the room and the bathroom looked like they have recently been decorated.

It is located just outside Venlo only 5 -10 minutes by car we were lucky and had a couple of sunny days which made sitting out side by the lake and having a nice drink very enjoyable. Even the very slow service of the girl servicing the drinks was not a problem.

We had one evening meal which was good but not brilliant there was a set menu without any choices. The breakfast was good but not sure if I could have survived another morning of listening to the same piped in Euro pop. Unlike fine wines for me Abba and the Brotherhood of man have not improved with age.

The plus points are the staff who are all very good if not a bit slow at times, its very clean, a brilliant bed, free car park and location.

Negative points old TV without many English channels and WIFI @ €9 a day.

Dear Coysh,

Thank you very much for taking the time to share your experiences with our hotel on Tripadvisor. Your review put a smile on my face reading your kind compliment regarding our friendly staff, the brilliant bed and our location.

I would like to thank you for your feedback regarding the speed of service from our restaurant staff. We will discuss this within our team. Regarding the playlist in our restaurant, you are absolutely right. We will change the playlist to make this more diverse and interesting.

In October we will equipe our hotel with new flatscreen televisions in all our rooms including more international channels. In addition to this lateron this year there will be a change in the way we offer internet in our hotels.

All in all this hotel is not that bad. Location is great, as the bulding is surrounded by a wonderful forest; rooms are quite clean and large and have recently been redecorated; breakfast selection is ok. However, something still needs to be improved: this is one of the very few 4-star hotels in western Europe where small CRT TVs and shower curtains still survive; walls and doors within rooms are tired and perhaps have been left untouched during refurbishment; the restaurant/breakfast hall seems to be a little bit worn as well. To sum up, it is definitely not a place to avoid, but maybe something better can be found somewhere around Venlo.

We spent 3 days in this hotel and enjoyed all of the experience. We booked it to visit the Floriade exhibition. The receptionists were more than helpful in providing us with information on transport. The central station and bus station are a 20 minute walk from the hotel but we took the car in and parked in the "allowed parking area" and took the bus. We had an executive room which was large, clean and well furnished. We also had a balcony overlooking the garden and in the entrace corridor was a large bathroom and a separate toilet on the other side of the corridor. The breakfasts were very goood. On the buffet table were all the continental meats and cheeses as well as scrambled eggs and bacon. The selection of bread was excellent and the taste was delicious. We used the swimming pool daily. We went into town for our evening meals,so cannot comment on the evening food, but the breakfasts were delicious. Highly recommended

Room Tip: We paid the extra for an executive room and there are towelling robes there. There is a lift down to...

We stayed at the Bilderberg Hotel for 3 nights whilst visiting the Floriade being held this year in Venlo. As others have already said the Hotel is set amongst trees and woodland walks on the edge of town - a beautiful setting with a terrace right next to the small lake - an ideal spot for a quiet drink or your evening meal.
The rooms are very well equiped and the beds amongst the most comfortable I have ever experienced! The staff were friendly and welcoming and the restaurant provided excellent quality food - although the prices reflected that - not particularly cheap.
The hotel is set on the edge of town and not the easiest place to find - so bring your sat nav if you intend to drive and even then you may find yourselves in a local housing estate but if you are fear not - you are probably very very close!
The grounds were lovely and the only noise came from the trains and level crossing close to the hotel - the barriers and bells operate quite late into the night and although you soon get used to this if you want absolute silence I am afraid it is not to be had even here!
The indoor pool was very nice with loungers inside and out (weather permitting) and all in all we had a wonderfully relaxing time - the perfect place to chill after a full day at the Floriade.

Room Tip: The hotels own website offers to upgrade you if you find a similar room cheaper elsewhere on the int...
