when we decided to visit the Museum we didn't know what to expect, but the exposition was very interesting and covering several historical events. the building itself is beautiful and the mix between the old and the new is well done.

the café is also nice but the toilettes are filthy

The red colour of the facade is certainly very eye catching. This is recommended in my guidebook but I wasn't too sure what to expect. When I got there, there's a banner outside on exhibitions by 3 Dutch woman artists. I was interested and so went inside to check them out. On entering, I noticed the old and new, a covered courtyard with a nice cafe. Works displayed were of different styles and themes. Some very cute, almost of naive style, part fantasy, part fairy tales, others include portraits, abstract colours and lights. On the whole, I enjoyed my visit very much (especially after seeing a lot of religious art and churches).
The cafe looked really nice, but I didn't have enough time to enjoy coffee/desserts. Perhaps next time when I am in Maastricht.

set in an architectural classic building with new details, the ladies of the reception were most helpful and the best in promoting the museum

And this in immediately the most interesting part of the museum; a 16th century building where Charles V used to dwell sometimes. Some modern parts were added to support the museum operation, but there are walls to see and rooms to visit. Regarding the exposition I was less impressed. Portraits painted with uniform expressions, cartoon-like paintings and luckily some miniatures that elevated the artistic level. A cafe is included on the ground floor. Entrance for a fee. Free entrance with the annual Dutch museum pass.

We came expecting to learn a little about the history of Maastricht but not so. The powers that be have decided to put all the historical exhibits into cold storage or return them to the donors. None of the guide books or Tourist information office have been notified. After paying our entrance fee we were treated to a second rate art exhibition by three artists, one of whom was the namesake of the curator. Nepotism springs to mind. While the good people of Maastricht may well want an exhibition of paintings, tourists would like some history. This, after all, is the reason to come here.
The staff including the delightful coffee shop staff were all very polite and helpful but don’t waste your money on entry.

Dear Rosssmack,

We are so sorry you were disappointed by your visit to our Museum. It is correct that we have not been a Museum about the history of Maastricht since the last 3-4 years. We now focus more on contemporary art, photography and pop culture.
If you find the time, could you please let us know in which guide book you found this incorrect information so we can fix this for future visitors? You can contact us via info@museumaanhetvrijthof.nl.
Also, we will of course contact the local tourist information office (VVV) to figure out what went wrong when they informed you about our Museum.

Thank you for your feedback.

Kind regards,
Museum aan het Vrijthof
