NH Maastricht
Ranked #12 of 38 Hotels in Maastricht
Certificate of Excellence
GreenLeadersGold level
Reviewed June 9, 2013

Yes it is a 4* hotel and I guess that this rating is justified …. but… you can get a certification with “pass” mark OR with “excellent” score. In this case NH Maastricht just gets the pass mark.

Is there a spacious “double” room? Yes, in terms of square meters but it is not a Queen/King size bed… only two single mattresses adjacent together, with so wear-out mattress you can feel the springs.
Is there a TV? Yes, but it is an old-type CRT TV and although in some cases it could be better than early generation TFTs, the reception is bad and the viewing experience terrible.
Is there a bathtub? Yes, in 4* hotels it is not "shower-only" … but yet again … it is not a full-size bath tub.
Do they have different pillows available? Yes, but it is not in your room. You have to call and ask explicitly and then they offer a great selection of four different types (e.g. neck support, soft, firm, organic) which is great.
Can you control the room temperature? Yes, but upon arrival at night of a winter day with minus 7 degrees outside temperature, you enter a cold room, you increase the thermostat, the noisy old-type overhead airflow regulator is filling up the room with freezing cold air that is already in the pipes … and then yes … you have nice hot (dry) air, that by the time the room temperature is fine, it is already morning and you have to check-out.
Do they have a parking on-site? Yes, but it costs 13.5 EUR per day … and the reception desk is keen to ask you if you arrived by car to suggest to use it … revealing only after asking that it is not Free. By the way… they were not so keen to mention the “free” WiFi. So …
Is there WiFi? Yes, and the login page is asking for 9 EUR payment for 24hrs access. Of course, you could get free codes from the reception but they failed to mention that during check-in. Just for best-practice sharing … in other hotels you are receiving a “Welcome” envelope with promotional material and your free wifi codes, prepared before arrival. In this case, they hadn’t prepared anything, they asked to keep my printout with the reservation number. I asked what would have happened if I hadn’t print it … and just kept an electronic copy in my smartphone… don’t they have my details in their reservation system already? The response was that in such a case I should have to forward to the hotel receptionist’s email address the verification, on the spot at check-in.
Is there a good breakfast? Yes, but if it isn’t included in your room rate it costs 20 EUR per person. Do they have hot-dishes available? Yes, but it is not prepared on the spot… it is kept hot with infra-red lamps and you can prepare your omellete yourself. They provide the frying pan, eggs and everything you would like to spice it with, plus the inductive type stove and instruction on how to operate it yourself. Nevertheless, the quality, varieties and quantities for breakfast is really vast and outstanding… and you couldn’t expect less for 20 EUR/p.p. – Breakfast is the “highlight” of the hotel.
So, the answers to all questions is YES and the hotel fulfills its 4* promise, but there are so many “buts”. I prefer branded chains … and I was also considering Novotel … I will go for that next time I will have to stay in Maastricth.

Situated next to the MECC, the Maastricht conference center, the hotel is a reliable, if bland, hotel, as is true of many members of the NH brand. The rooms are airy, the pillows lumpy, the bathroom is clean, the windows open (a plus considering how airtight most rooms are these days...), the breakfast the ususal mix of continental and American offerings. In a word, noothing offensive and nothing outstanding. Very convenient if you attend a conference at the MECC, but of not, better hotels downtown.

Hotel situated close to university. Very good service, friendly people who take pride in making the stay cosy. I will for sure go again. Food is excellent and they can rent you a bicycle or even an original Vespa scooter

This location is really geared for those who have a conference at the MECC. The scenery is dreary with buildings and little to do. The rooms are average and they charge for everything including gym and wellness centre. The wifi is free though but you have to get a new password every day which is silly. Don't stay here unless you have a conference at the conference centre next door. This is very convenient for the conference goers but boring for anyone else not attached to the conference.

Hotel located next to the conference center (Forum MECC) and as short walk from University Hospital, with frequent bus and train service to city center. Otherwise, in a rather uninteresting neighborhood , with no activity (restaurants, bars, etc. ..) going on.
Typical business hotel, reasonnably modern and rooms reasonnably furnished.
Breakfast buffet on the expensive side (20 EUR). One restaurant and one bar, with exceptionnaly slow service. If you want drinks in your room (water, sodas,...) it has to be purchased from the bar. Free wireless internet, but a bit slow. Higher speed is at a cost.
House keeping somewhat cheap on replenishing toiletteries and towels.

This hotel is nice, clean and comfortable. But there some things that can be done to become a better hotel. The room is comfortable, but there is no mini bar. this hotel is not a 4 stars, but 3 stars or 2 superior. Another bad thing that this hotel should provide to the guest is a free parking, it is not near of city center and a lot of guests go there by car, so a free parking will be good. All the car parkings in Netherlands are very expensive.
At overall, this hotel is nice, friendly staff and good property. So I recommend.

Rooms of this hotel are 2 or max 3 star. Very simple bath room no mini bar and no nice view. Positive aspect is that the hotel is clean and breakfast is ok. This kind of business hotel without any character you find everywhere in the world. Price > 160 eur for a room is not in sync with the quality delivered
