Yes it is a 4* hotel and I guess that this rating is justified …. but… you can get a certification with “pass” mark OR with “excellent” score. In this case NH Maastricht just gets the pass mark.
Is there a spacious “double” room? Yes, in terms of square meters but it is not a Queen/King size bed… only two single mattresses adjacent together, with so wear-out mattress you can feel the springs.
Is there a TV? Yes, but it is an old-type CRT TV and although in some cases it could be better than early generation TFTs, the reception is bad and the viewing experience terrible.
Is there a bathtub? Yes, in 4* hotels it is not "shower-only" … but yet again … it is not a full-size bath tub.
Do they have different pillows available? Yes, but it is not in your room. You have to call and ask explicitly and then they offer a great selection of four different types (e.g. neck support, soft, firm, organic) which is great.
Can you control the room temperature? Yes, but upon arrival at night of a winter day with minus 7 degrees outside temperature, you enter a cold room, you increase the thermostat, the noisy old-type overhead airflow regulator is filling up the room with freezing cold air that is already in the pipes … and then yes … you have nice hot (dry) air, that by the time the room temperature is fine, it is already morning and you have to check-out.
Do they have a parking on-site? Yes, but it costs 13.5 EUR per day … and the reception desk is keen to ask you if you arrived by car to suggest to use it … revealing only after asking that it is not Free. By the way… they were not so keen to mention the “free” WiFi. So …
Is there WiFi? Yes, and the login page is asking for 9 EUR payment for 24hrs access. Of course, you could get free codes from the reception but they failed to mention that during check-in. Just for best-practice sharing … in other hotels you are receiving a “Welcome” envelope with promotional material and your free wifi codes, prepared before arrival. In this case, they hadn’t prepared anything, they asked to keep my printout with the reservation number. I asked what would have happened if I hadn’t print it … and just kept an electronic copy in my smartphone… don’t they have my details in their reservation system already? The response was that in such a case I should have to forward to the hotel receptionist’s email address the verification, on the spot at check-in.
Is there a good breakfast? Yes, but if it isn’t included in your room rate it costs 20 EUR per person. Do they have hot-dishes available? Yes, but it is not prepared on the spot… it is kept hot with infra-red lamps and you can prepare your omellete yourself. They provide the frying pan, eggs and everything you would like to spice it with, plus the inductive type stove and instruction on how to operate it yourself. Nevertheless, the quality, varieties and quantities for breakfast is really vast and outstanding… and you couldn’t expect less for 20 EUR/p.p. – Breakfast is the “highlight” of the hotel.
So, the answers to all questions is YES and the hotel fulfills its 4* promise, but there are so many “buts”. I prefer branded chains … and I was also considering Novotel … I will go for that next time I will have to stay in Maastricth.
