“La mangerie - crown plaza”
Reviewed January 1, 2012

We spent the new years eve diner at the mangerie and have to say that this is one of the worst culinary experience in a so called dining table i have ever had.

To start with after having reconconfirmed the booking twice the maitre d'hotel announced us that there was no table left in the main restaurant and parked us near the bar restaurant. It is is simply inadmissible that the restaurent overbooked. Secondly the course menu was a disaster. Cold meat served with ketchup (yes ketchup) and simple mashed pottatoes!! Acide sorbet bathing in vodka and an ice cream coming out from a supermarket package. When complained about the quality of the food the waiter did not seem to share any interest or concern about our disatisfaction. Price tag was 150 eur for two. Total rip off. Being a frequent traveler myself for the last 15 years this the first time i am writing a negative review about a dining place.

We had booked a 2 days arrangement with surprise dinner and an upgrade to a business room. Overall, it was an excellent stay. A very nice room, excellent breakfast and dinner and very nice staff. Moreover, it is very well located just in front of the historic city and connected by it by a pedestrian bridge. there are also very nice shops and restaurants nearby.

Room Tip: Business room is excellent

I stayed here for 3 nights earlier this year.
You should take a "Maas-kamer" which stands for a room with fantastic view on the old city at the other side of the river "de Maas".
The hotel itself is perfectly situated on the right bank of the river in a trendy neighbourhood not far from the railwaystation with perfect restaurants and interesting small shops.
Rooms, breakfast, bar and restaurant as well as the staff are perfect.

First time I visited this place was 25 years ago.
An impressive establishment at that time, was far ahead from any other hotel in Maastricht.
The city has changed however, and the competition is close now or even better sometimes.
The location near the river and the new pedestrian bridge remains the main advantage.
The breakfast area overlooking the cable road, the river, and the old city is unique.
The quality of the breakfast and presentation was remarkable. Then, everything else is going down to average rating for the level of such an hotel.
My room was rather small and well furnished, however I could not help but observing some details that showed the lack of a complete renovation: old CRT tv(!), old telephone handset, old models of bathroom systems and tiles, absence of automatic save energy card switches.
Some of the personnel was not experienced, and all of them were slow in service for my standards. At certain parts of the day there seemed to be one lady at the desk only, who would not answer telephone calls if she was occupied with another task at the same time!
Internet service was not free (9 euros for 24 hour wifi PER DEVICE), and it always gives me
a bad impression when hotels follow this charging practice.
The restaurant of the hotel is an asset, since food and service was excellent at very reasonable price.  There was also a second restaurant  serving Japanese food. Unfortunately I did not have the time to try it too.
The price I paid for a double room was rather high: 160 euros+9 for Internet+10 for ..city charges= 179 euros per night.

Room Tip: Ask for river view rooms if available

Good location with good food, but still a bit expensive for what you get. The room was really dated. The TV set was from the 20th century, the bathroom lacked a wow factor. But everything was very clean.
The breakfast room offers a magnificent view on the river Maas, with cargo boats and pleasure crafts passing by.
Difficult to reach if you're traveling by car. The railway station however is nearby.

Almost every year we pay a visit to the beautiful, historcal and most pleasant city of Maastricht. Most years we stayed in the hotel Maastricht, now Crowne Plaza Maastricht. And mostly very satisfactorily.
So we returned this summer again to the same place. And we discovered that gradually the quality of the hotel is dropping in the same degree as the prices are going up.

Our room seemed not to be changed (refurnished or modernized) over the last decade. In the bathroom the pressure on the water of the shower was minimal, although we stayed at the first floor. And during evening and night we got disturbed by outside noises, from the reception and the smokers area.

Breakfast in this hotel was for a long time examplarary for how breakfast should be: extensive buffet with a wide choice, served with dedication, in a nice area with view over the river Maas. Now - with closing time only at 10 in the morning - the area is still the same, but the service is limited and the choice half of what it was. Up to that: the breakfast is expensive.

Valet parking [also expensive: € 22 p/day] is on offer and can be reserved in advance. But when you arrive you must ask once more to have the car parked. The same on departure. Furthermore: connection to the internet is not free and costs a considerable amount as well.
Priority Club-cardholders can have their paper in the morning, but should ask for it and collect it themselves at the reception.

A staff member told us that some problems [shower] and changes [breakfast] are due to the fact that the hotel is following an 'eco-policy'. In principle very commandable, but the result is also that this in our perception costs the hotel one star.

Room Tip: Rooms on the river side are quieter and lighter

We love this hotel , we keep returning, position next to the wide river with excellent rooms and bar resturuant areas overlooking the river. From the hotel entrances you can choose to walk through the very intresting selection of resturuants and shops at the rear of the hotel or from you can walk along the river to one of the near by bridges , cross over the bridge for the larger stores and more fantastic bars , shops etc..

Only downside is the cost of the parking, although I love my car I dont think I should be paying £22 a night for its kennel, a very expensive week if you use the hotels underground car park which in fairness they lease from Q parks.

Room Tip: ask for a river view , they have always accomadated us with one
