“Nice rooms, really nice staff”
Reviewed July 1, 2013

Nice big room, but it was the staff that really make the hotel. Far enough from the centre not to be too loud, but close enough to just be short walk to the rest of town. The stairs are very steep and can be hard work when you are a bit tired or have had a few cocktails at the bar down the road.

When visiting towns and cities for a couple of days, we have come to the conclusion that you don't need to pay over the top for posh hotels, as it's the city you are visiting not the hotel! We were delighted with this little hotel, lovely old building renovated to a very good standard. We were given a warm welcome, and we were offered a welcome drink, the room was comfortable, clean with a good bed, the shower was big, and breakfast very tasty, juice, cereals, good variety of breads, meats, cheeses, jams, and scrambled egg and bacon if you wish. The added bonus is that it is close to the centre and within walking distance of all the main attractions. The parking across the canal is quite expensive but safe. This hotel is a little gem.

Room Tip: Other reviewers mentioned road noise, we had no problem, and there were ear plugs in the room if nee...

We stayed in the attic of the 1634 building. It's on a gracht (canal) in the centre of Groningen. The room was very comfortable, and the interior of the hotel is very stylish and enjoyable to be in. If we return to Groningen, we will return to the hotel.
Note: There is a good parking garage just over the canal from the hotel which will supply a discounted parking ticket (charged with the room) when you leave.

Some hotels are effortlessly not looking like hotels but succeed in making you feel as if you stay with some good friends instead.
Corps de Garde is a nice, lovely looking place to spend a good couple of days in Groningen.
Yes, it may be noisy at times because of the wooden floors and lack of double glazing, but those aspects also increase the feeling of a genuine return to the past when hotels were more than sterile double glazed boxes that are all competing to have the same look and feel. Not so here. Authenticity, charm and old-fashioned comfort, served by friendly staff are what should draw you here.

The breakfast is simple but very fresh and the coffee is first class. Earplugs are provided for those who choose to use them and the bathroom was very clean, spacy and well equipped. Beds are rather soft, which is something I personally like.

The location is about 500 meters from the city center of town and you can park in an nearby public parking or just across the street.

Room Tip: I had a room looking out over the canal and the street and I can imagine it may be a tad noisy for s...

You enter through the restaurant and find out that the bar is the reception. You feel being in a Dutch pub or English Inn and are welcomed by friendly and hospitable staff. The owners have been gifted, being able to turn this monument into modern hotel that did not loose its historical identity. We are in Groningen and for the Dutch this is the middle of nowhere, a cold empty spot on the map. The heart beat is provided by the old Universtity with a worldly reputation and this hotel just fits in this atmosphere. Around the corner is the old inner city of Groningen and young people and good looking people are here dominating the cosy streets, shops and restaurants. The hotel blends very well in and if there was anything which should be changed: serve also a few good hot plates for lunch and explain your guests how to operate the fancy showers; my spouse and I felt ....... that we had to think and try for 5 minutes how to gt water out the tap. But nothing wrong with water power and temperature.
For your reference: we are familiar wth hotels in a completely differnt price range, between Euro 200-400, and also reviewed a few of these negatively. This hotel offers value for money.

The best feature of the hotel is the ever helpful staff, always willing to expedite requests promptly.
The building itself is an historic army guard house given that in mind the rooms have been renovated to the point were they are spacious and comfortable
The windows could do with some double-glazing investment as the noise from the street is loud
They compensate for this with complimentary earplugs but personally I’d prefer double glazing….
As for the room, the bathroom is commodious and decent but without a shower door the floor gets a wet.
The extraction vent inside failed to work but there was no sign of mould yet.
The aircon didn’t seem to operate when I tested it but the radiators’ did come on in the morning.
The sofa in the room is simply too uncomfortable to sit on to watch TV and the plastic desk chair about the same.
The internet was free but kept dropping out to the point I would have complained if I would have paid for this service.

Breakfast is a continental affair which was fine for me with prompt service

Recently we stayed at the hotel. We had the "balkenkamer". The room itself wasn't that impressive, but is was oke. The staff is very helpfull and polite. Breakfast is lovely with very tasty bread and buns.
