“Pleasant no-nonsense hotel at great location”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 24, 2013

I have stayed here 5 times over the last year. Put bluntly: the price on the NH website is too high, but twice I had a voucher for 50% discount, and booking.com offers cheaper prices.
The location is perfect, in the very city centre and close to many of the university buildings, but nonetheless no problems of noise from outside. Colleagues often go the University guest house (where I also have been twice), but if you can get a fair price, you should absolutely prefer Hotel de Ville above the University guesthouse.
Do not expect a splashy hotel, which would not fit in Groningen anyway. But everything is OK to pleasant. I had a different room each time; sizes differ. Rooms are clean, and those at the back are very quiet. One small point of complaint: For some reason the NH hoteles (I had the same experience in Amsterdam) do not daily refill the minibars. Also, the rooms only have one type of glass, so that one must drink beer from the bottle or out of a large wineglass.
The breakfast does not have a multitude of choices, but a broad choice of healthy foods. Personnel is attentive and friendly, without overdoing it. Everything typically Groningen.

Room Tip: Rooms at the back are quieter at night, but not if you need to sleep in. At 8:30 the children going...

Often stayed over a number of years, always good staff, good breakfast and excellent dinner if you use the restaurant attached to the hotel for dinner. Quieter rooms at the back. Some might find the decor dated (not I). Overall I like it and rate it.

Here for 4 nights with work. Previously stayed outside of Groningen and the location of this hotel is superb for a walk around the city centre.
Clean rooms, modern vibe to the whole place, only small let down was the breakfast could do with a revamp, it's a bit basic with just cult cuts and no real warm food to kick start the day.
Friendly, helpful staff with a very warm ambience to the whole hotel.

This hotel is to expensive for the rooms you get. The connection to the internet was a major struggle. The staff was kind and helpful. This is not a place I will return to. The breakfast was meager and expensive.

I stayed here for 1 night only during the fantastic Noorderzon festival. I booked online through an agency website and got a very cheap deal. But the general standard of the place was much lower than I had expected to be considering the usual NH Hoteles quality levels.
The foyer and public areas of the Hotel de Ville are great, but the room was really scruffy. The wifi didn't seem to work anywhere, and the bar only served one type of (Spanish of course) red wine from an open bottle that had clearly been there for a few days judging by the taste. Expensive breakfast (€17) and very little fresh fruit was also not what I would have expected from their website. Shame as it's a good location but next time I'll certainly go elsewhere.

We were pleased to be given an upgrade upon arrival but having requested a quiet room in the original booking then we were very disappointed to get the room over the street that had students partying from 10 - 5am. Not conducive to a peaceful night. The hotel did recognise that it could be noisy though as they had supplied ear plugs.
So we loved the room and thank you for the upgrade but would not want to stay in that room again and would have expected that a request for a quiet room would have been noted.
The downstairs reception and lobby area and bar/garden are very nice though and an oasis of calm away from the bustling student city of Groningen.

Room Tip: Ask for a room away from the street! Noisy otherwise

1 point for great staff
1 point for location
1 bonus point for staff and location

I stayed here for a week while in Groningen for business. I'll get straight to the Pros and Cons:

Pros:
1. As mentioned before, the staff was extremely courteous. They were genuinely the nicest people and always greeted me with a warm smile.
2. Location is the main reason to stay here. It's just a few minutes walk from everything. You even have a few restaurant and bar options right next door. Downtown is about a 5 min walk, the gym (Springs.nl) is 5 min, 15 min walk from Groningen train station, and 10 min walk to car rental (Europcar).
3. Rooms are clean

Cons:
1. Bed is hard as a rock
2. The free Wifi is a joke. For 24 hr high speed (functional) internet, it's about 8 Euro.
3. Valet parking is available but it's 19 Euro a day - you can find free parking nearby
4. If you have a room near the playground / school, forget about sleeping in. It gets noisy early on weekdays (about 8am)
5. No gym, fitness center

Tip: Groningen is basically a college town. The nightlife gets started late (for those from the US) - around midnight or so and doesn't stop until past 5am. Busy nights are Thurs - Sat nights.

Room Tip: Get a room not facing the playground / school :)
