“surroundings are beautiful”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 22, 2009

I stayed just one night in the middle of May 2009 for business. Hotel Val Monte is a bit traditional and typically a lot of retired people stay here for vacation. The hotel is comfortable, the room has standard facilities. The view from the room and from the terrace was fabulous. The food is mediocre, nothing to remember. Staff is friendly.
Although the hotel is OK and the surroundings are beautiful I would not recommend to stay there if you have no car as it is quite difficult to reach the city centre of Nijmegen, each time we had to wait more than half an hour for a taxi.

A good hotel if you need some peace and quiet and like to either stay in the hotel or go for a walk. There were not many people in the hotel which made it more quiet.

The room was spacious and had a good garden/forest view.

Dinner was slightly expensive .......... the service was attentive - OK for a hotel but not sophisticated in any way.

If you like a quiet time in the woods, go for it.

The hotel had a deal with Swisscom for the internet .......... it was extortionate and certainly not worth paying for. Why hotels such as this enter into these agreements when the competition are offering free internet access, I do not know. I shall check whether the contract has been abandoned before staying again. If you like quiet wood this is probably not important!

This hotel is fully renovated and absolutely worth it's 4 stars.
It is very quietly situated in the forests, right beside very nice signposted walking trails. Easy to reach by bus from Nijmegen station (bus 8, stop has name of the hotel, 20 minutes). Rooms are quite nice if you like the modern Jugendstil style. Very clean. They have very cheap single rooms, for an amazing low price, find their website. There's a small swimming pool in the basement, with garden view. Good breakfast which in good weather can be enjoyed on the large terrace with garden view.
A special note though: in the weekends it is very quiet (as it is 250 meters from a road and beside a quiet other road) but during weekdays they are now doing construction work with buldozers beside the hotel, where 54 apartments are going to be build between the bus stop and the hotel. This noise quite ruins the quietness and only 6 rooms (with balcony) overlooking the garden escape that noise. All other rooms are seriously affected by it and for quite a while this will NOT be a hotel for rest-seekers outside weekends. Enquire about this before booking outside weekends..

  • Liked — Cheap single room, quietness in weekend
  • Disliked — Noise outside hotel during weekdays

In no way is a 4 star hotel! The lobby and front desk looks nice, but the rooms are not. Old TV, no minibar, small bathroom, breakfast not very good, no roomservice.

This hotel is also mainly visited by retired people. So breakfast is served early and the hotel bar closes before midnight.

Would not stay here again.

This hotel pretends to be a 4-star hotel. In my opinion, only the lobby is, since that has been renovated recently.

At arrival, they couldn't find our reservation but we got a room anyway since we printed the confirmation email. The room was very small, old and small beds with lumps in the matrasses, half-broken down tv, no mini bar and there was mold in the bathroom. Bathroom amenities weren't replenished every day so we had to run to the reception in the middle of the night to get some toilet paper.... The only upside of the room was the view on the lovely park at the back which could be seen from the (small)balcony. We heard that some of the other rooms were renovated as well but this one clearly wasn't!

Breakfast was so so; staff had problems replenishing out of stocks and clearing tables in time.

The hotel bar is dull and expensive.

All in all absolutely no 4-star experience! Beautiful and quiet location but that's all in my opinion.

  • Liked — The beautiful and quiet surroundings (woods).
  • Disliked — The room and beds.
  • Tips/Secrets — Ask for a renovated room...

Situated in a lovely park overlooking the Maas valley, the Val Monte is a MUST if you do not wish to spend an exorbitant sum on lodging and still want to enjoy the comfort of a four-star-hotel.

Rooms are spacious enough, everything is spotlessly clean. The employees are friendly. Breakfast buffet is included in the usual rates and really worth your while.

Only drawbacks:

1) relatively far from the city
2) pool area could be larger and less depressing
