“NEVER DISAPPOINTED AT VAN DER VALK”
Reviewed October 30, 2013

Over the years we have stayed in many van der Valk Hotels and we have very rarely been disappointed. The brand has improved a lot over the years athough there are quite some differences between the new ones and the old ones, so to say.
Assen is a good mix of old and new. The older part is well maintained and kept up to date and the new part is fully state-of-the-art. We had room 414, at the end of the corridor in the newly build extension, sold as a comfort room and it was just perfect. We have stayed in many international 5 star hotels where the room was not as good as this one.
The room is clean, beds are great and the bathroom is excellent with a nice bathtube and a separate walk in rain shower. Very spacious. The breakfast is just very good with life cooking (eggs to your liking), a good selection and a good lay-out so can handle lots of traffic at rush-hour.
You do need you walkingshoes though as it's not a small place. And like all van der Valk's, it's not in the city centre so you do need your car. But on the motorway A28, exit 33, with plenty of free parking available.
W'll be back, no worries.

I stayed here for a ten day business trip and I really liked it so I will be using it regularly. My room was very nice with an enormous bathroom with a spa bath and seperate shower. I was up on the second floor and I really liked the balcony which was great for getting some fresh air in the evenings. Food is fine and the room service was spot on. The hotel is large and is pretty confusing to find your way round at first it took me a few days to get my bearings. All in all a good stay and I would recommend it.

We were meant to stay down the road at De Bonte Wever. But when they let us down, Hotel Van der Valk calmly stepped in and picked up the pieces.

Their staff were kind and professional and the rooms were spacious and spotless.

Stayed in a few Van Der Valk Hotels the past year and mostly business related. This time I had an appointment in Assen and did not want to drive into the city centre to find a hotel. Van Der Valk has improved over the years and is not a bad place to stay, but would not go here if I was on a leisure trip. Room is clean, beds are great and the breakfast is good too. So if you need a place to stay near Assen and want to get there quickly, go here... it's next to the freeway A28 exit 33.

Room Tip: All rooms are quite the same, no tip sorry.

We were a group of bikers. we came to TT Assen for a 3 day training.
The hotel location was very good for us, about 10 minutes by taxi from the track.
But the taxis are expensive an average of 20 Euro each way.
We had rooms on the ground floor with a view on the back forest which was very relaxing.
The breakfast was very good.
Overall good experience

Room Tip: Go for the ground floor rooms, specially if you have a heavy suitcase.

We had been in this hotel a few years ago, we then stayed in the Wellness suite.
This time we stayed in the smaller junior suite with our six month old son. The price is about € 80,00 less then the Wellness suite. The room is large and has a very comfortable bed. In the center of the room is a large oval bubble bath which fit two persons easily. There is also a shower cabin in the room with a rain shower and steam unit in it. There are no seats in the shower to enjoy the steam while sitting down. Room has a safe and air conditioning and plenty of closets.

Both the shower and toilet are hidden behind a mirror wall which is a bit see through depending on which side of the glass there's more light intensity. So it might be a little less suitable for you when you like your privacy, or just don't use the light.
There's a minibar in the room, use of it is included in the room price. It has two kinds of soda cans, orange juice and water. Also three small bottle of liquor. A candy bar, snack and wine is also included. There's also a coffee machine in the room as well as a cooker for water. Both coffee and tea are supplied in different tastes.

The tv is a large flat screen, right next to the hotel is a recreation area where you can bike or swim weather permitting. Breakfast isn't included in all rates but it is a extensive breakfast with a large choose of breads, hot and cold food and all kind of juices.

All in all a very comfortable and clean room, friendly staff.

But there are a few little things that aren't perfect.
- balcony has no dividers so neighbors could get on your balcony.
- nothing to hang towels in the bath part of the room.
- no trashcan near the washstand.
- no spare tissues on the wash stand. We ran out after taking a few, it wasn't restocked during our stay.
- no restocking of shampoo of bath gel.
- drinking glasses aren't cleaned or changed during a multi day stay.
- we also returned to our room after being away all day to find out the door wasn't locked after cleaning the room. The death bolt was out to prevent the door to close. Luckily nothing was missing in our room but it wasn't a good thing to find the room unlocked.
- long walk from the reception area and multiple elevators has to be used to get to the room, since we had a baby in a strawler.
- the use of a baby bed costs € 7,50 a day but it is a comfortable bed with sheets provided.

We just returned from 3 nights with 2 standard double rooms (235 & 237) facing highway. We had pre-booked the rooms with a great value special offer.

Pros:
- 5 star breakfast
- large room
- large bathroom with bath and separate shower
- free fast wi-fi (but Skype calls charged)
- large flatscreen TV
- plentiful free parking
- nice walks behind hotel
- 15 mins cycle to centre of Assen
- located by motorway exit so fast access
- good restaurant

Cons:
- no air conditioning so room is warm/ stuffy even in cool temperatures
- opening balcony window for needed fresh air lets in highway noise
- front desk warned about possible party noise till midnight (although we did not hear any).

Room Tip: Ask for a room not facing the motorway. (Even numbered?)
