“What a fab venue for a really large party”
Reviewed November 4, 2011

My self my husband and son joined a moveable feast of friends and family at the Crewe and Harpur over the half term week. We hired the cottages as well as the pub. This proved great as we had a range of ages and requirements within the group. The cottages were largely given over to those with young children who needed some peace and quiet of an evening, but the baby monitor still worked if mum and dad wanted to come across to the main building once the little ones were abed. The rooms in the pub were lovely, kitted out to very high standard and the bathrooms were gorgeous. We did have a couple of issues with the heating at the very top of the building, but the guys who run the place were very courteous and responsive whenever we needed them and sorted out our issues. The kitchen in the Crewe is a bit of a dinosaur but big enough to cater to a full complement of guests, at one point I think we had 33 people sitting down. The pub itself is great and everyone loved being able to pour their own pints. The area is very picturesque and there are some challenging walks right outside your door with access to a couple of flatter bycicle trails with beautiful scenery a short drive away. Overall I would definitly recommend it and the folk who run it could not have been more welcoming or helpful.

Room Tip: Get room 5 in the crewe if you can by far the largest and has a fab roll top bath, and a view out ac...

Fantastic! We just returned from a 3 night stay having taken over the whole Crewe and Harpur, along with the 3 cottages.

Group: 30 adults, mostly couples and a handful of kids. Travel cots were provided and a couple of put up beds for the older kids. Some travelling from as far as Paris for the weekend.

Occasion: My Birthday... and an excuse for a big party.

Village: The village is great, and well worth a visit in it's own right. 2 other good pubs, one doing food, a chippy (rated very highly by those who visited it at 10pm on Friday), village shop, craft centre/hall and even a cool artist studio/gallery down a back alley.

We paid to have 3 barrels of beer put on tap and these were all set and ready to rock when we turned up. (1 bitter, 1 carling, 1 grolsch). We are BIG drinkers and we managed to finish the bitter (the gents LOVED the real ale) and the Grolsch, but was some carling left. We were drinking all night for all 3 nights, so perhaps that helps with deciding on quantity if you are getting beers. Lots of pub fridge space and ice machine for the shorts/wine etc.

Despite it being a sleepy village, you can make plenty of noise INSIDE the pub, but we made sure the smokers were keeping it down outside after 11.

Everyone was amazed by the standard of the rooms (room 5 is best but all are great), cottages are right next to the pub and form the edges of the courtyard, so aren't left out of it, but also have that extra escape of their own kitchens/living rooms if needed.

So all in all, we had a fantastic time. It really was as if we owned our own pub for the weekend. We even had to turn away some walkers who were looking for somewhere to stay on the Saturday night.

We had a big party on Friday, did a great hangover clearing walk on Saturday (nice 5ish mile round walk across ridge to Quiet Woman pub and back), even bigger party on Saturday, and a very sedate Sunday including cinema in the 'lounge' room and pub quiz.

My only complaint was that there weren't enough dishwasher tablets for the amount of times we put the dishwasher on (I know this is lame, but it's hard to come up with anything wrong and we did have to pop across the road for extra after the 10 load of pint glasses was washed).

Book it, enjoy, but don't forget it's MY pub!!! :)

Room Tip: 5 is master bedroom, but all the rooms in C&H are great. There is one twin in one of the cottag...

I had my hen weekend at the Crewe and Harpur and it was immense! The venue is gorgeous and a brilliant idea for a big group - the run of your own pub for the weekend! We had the pub and one of the cottages - we loved every minute. We took on the theme of being in the pub with a pub quiz on the Friday, and took in some fab views on the Saturday with a walk to the Pack Horse Inn. It was great to be able to have a party back at the C&H on saturday night too. My friend who had planned the weekend had done a big Asda shop to see us through which I'd also recommend doing. It was an amazing weekend and I'd recommend it to anybody!

We booked the Crewe and Harper and the 3 cottages next to it for my husband's 40th birthday party celebrations. Our party consisted of 18 adults and 14 children and it was perfect.
The courtyard was great for the BBQ we had, the kids had their own little playground and in the evening the bar was an excellent focal point for the adults to congregate around. The kitchen was perfect and there was more than enough glasses, cutlery and crockery and the 2 dishwashers were a great help.
The bedrooms were well furnished, with wonderfully comfortable beds and very modern bathrooms. We especially loved the roll top baths and the whole place was very well cleaned. I really can't praise this accommodation enough. The only thing I would say is that the car park entrance should really have a gate on it, but that is my only negative.
The directions given were also very clear and we had no problem finding it.
The local area is beautiful and we were really pleased with our visit to Blackbrook Zoological park and the Swains centre for Go karting.
Our friends who joined us just couldn't believe how great the whole place was and we will definitely book again and will recommend it to everyone who needs accommodation for a large party.

We went to the Crewe and Harpur for my 40th Birthday, 32 ladies of a mixed age from 20 up to 70 plus!! It was great, the pub itself had everything we needed, the kitchen was fab and all dinners etc were prepared for all 32 in this kitchen without any problems. The rooms are clean and have all amenities to a very high spec and the 3 cottages that come with the pub are amazing, the views are beautiful and the amenities are again all up to a good spec.We used the barbie on the sat night which did take ages and we did resort to using the kitchen for most of the food but we were having such a great time, the party went on all weekend. I would recommend this to anybody really, we talked about bringing the hubbies and the kids, you could be aload of couples, males, females as you can go for some lovely walks and there are a lot of structured themed activities that the owners of the pub gave us information on. We didn't do any of thjese just because of the nature of our weekend.

Room Tip: All rooms are lovely however rooms 4 and 5 in thep

This former pub is a brilliant place to hold a party or enjoy a large family and friends holiday. The 8 bedrooms are all en-suite and have flat screen TV's. Full catering kitchen plus original bar and a large lounge. You can be your own cook and barman or they can provide as little or much as you want. The owners are very helpful and their pub The Royal Oak at Hurdlow (just off the A515) a couple of miles up the road is well worth a visit for the food and real ale. Great scenery, plenty of attractions in the area (including the National Tramway Museum) and wonderful walking starting from outside the door.

Room Tip: Get there before the rest of your party.

I think this venue has changed a lot since some of these reviews were written. It's now a venue which can be hired out on its own for large parties. We hired the pub and three surrounding cottages for my sister's hen weekend and it was brilliant. Beautiful location, loads of space, and really unusual to be staying in your own pub!! We picked up the keys from the nearby Royal oak, and Kelly who checked us in was lovely, really helpful - even if I didn't take all the info in!! Loads of room in the bar, a huge lounge area and a great kitchen - I'd recommend this to anyone who'd like an unusual location for an awesome party.
