“This is how good pub food should be”
Reviewed February 9, 2013

My family and I decided to go to the Royal Oak on the recommendation of several friends. When I called, at relatively short notice for a Saturday evening reservation they managed to fit us in to a 'cellar room', but rather than impose it upon us the gentleman asked me to check out the images on the website. It looked fine, so we confirmed the reservation.
Upon arrival, the cellar room was certainly in the cellar but was a great room for larger groups (one table could seat upto 10, the other 16).
The menu was very extensive, varied and with lots of choice. The staff were efficient, friendly and attentive and, has been said on TA before, more than happy to cater to your needs.
The food was simply superb. It was well prepared, arrived hot and the quality was excellent. They pride themselves on using local suppliers where possible and it shows. A word of warning however, it must be said that the portions are on the large side so take care if you have your eye on the desert menu - you may not make it!
The Royal Oak is not the cheapest for pub food but is by no means expensive. we thought the value was very good. I would say this is one of the very best we have been to and will definitely return.

“Dissapointing food this visit”
Reviewed February 9, 2013

We come here often and have recommended this pub to lots of friends but the food on this visit was a big dissapointment. The meat in my Stilton & Steak Pie was all lean and plentiful but sadly was overcooked & overpowered with rather too much stilton, the pastry top was good and the chips were gorgeous. My husband had the gammon which was not as expected it was actually similar to two slices of bacon, he could not complain as unlike other establishments there was no weight on the menu eg 10oz, also being allergic to eggs it is a shame there was no pineapple, again other establishments offer eggs and pineapple. It would have looked a sorry meal if he had not accepted the offer of peas.
On our many other visits we have always been very satisfied especially the sunday lunches. H

“Great Traditional Pub”
Reviewed January 25, 2013

Deservedly just won Debryshire Traditional Pub of the Year award. A great pub with real ales, open fire and fantastic food. Sunday dinners are immense and the sandwiches are meals in themselves. The staff are extremely friendly and obliging. Would recommend for a Drink, for a Meal as well as the varied accommodation linked to the pub. Excellent

“A gem”
Reviewed January 20, 2013

Ate here twice in January.

Excellent food which was mainly locally sourced with a good choice of local real ales. What more could you ask....other than a roaring fire which it had!
