“Great Food & Realistic Prices”

Was recommended The Royal Oak at Hurdlow near Buxton, whilst staying in a Guest House in Buxton. We visited twice during our stay in the area. It is very easy to find, and its location is lovely. Like other Reviewers we were told the portions could be quite big, and over the couple of visits we had the Millonaires Fish Pie (which was brilliant), Chilli Con Carne; Sirloin Steak; and Pork Loin - all very good, would certainly have again.

I have reviewed the pub and its gorgeous food separately to the campsite as that was a five star plus experience. The campsite would have got 5 stars as well but the only thing that let it down was the drone of the extractor fan on the side of the pub that went on till late at night and started up early morning. Other than that it was an excellent site, good clean facilities and a lovely area. The bonus of a fantastic pub on the doorstep. I would stay again with the addition of some travel earplugs as the food and beer at the royal oak are fantastic.

Just like to say thanks to all the staff at the Royal Oak. Great food and great service. I left my sons I pad in the pub and the staff recognized us the next day and returned it. I also had a flat battery and one of the staffs dads went out of his way to get me back on the road.

Great overall experience.

Stayed here for 3 nights on the campsite.. First time in the area. Perfectly placed for Haddon Hall and Chatsworth and if you are a biker or keen walker it is sheer perfection all topped off with a great selection of local beers and very good food. The staff in the pub go that extra mile to treat you as a person rather than a table number. The terrace at the back makes a perfect spot for eating out.
Access to the Tissington trail is from corner of bottom field. The site is very safe for small children.
There are no electric hook ups which means few caravans and probably the only downside is that there is no facility to freeze ice packs which could have been a problem in the recent hot spell. Also a canopy of some sort over the outside washing up area would be good.

We stumbled upon The Royal Oak on Google as we were looking for a place to stay in The Peaks for our cycling/drinking stag weekend (rock and roll eh?!). Situated just outside of Buxton and close to the bike trails, it was the perfect spot. On arrival were greeted by the landlord, Paul, who showed us to our cheap (£15pppn!) but perfectly adequate "bunk barns" which was our accommodation for the weekend. I've read a few reviews about the food being expensive...it's Gastropub prices and quality, so stop moaning! The lads who live local (Manchester area) said they would be coming back with their families, so obviously made an impression. Perfect for families, couples, stag and hen parties...cheers!

Room Tip: Pitch your tent on the bottom field!

Just a pub meal with with a difference. Whilst many pubs offer poor service and are closing down this one gives you a welcome on arrival, drinks are brought to you (instead of queuing at the bar) and the whole feel of the place was nice.

Weather was fab so we decided to sit out on the patio, as I ordered food from the "greeter" I asked if he knew the table numbers outside - "We don't use numbers" he replied. This is typical of the place - you aren't a number and why would you want to be?

Been a few times now and every time it's as good (or better) than the last time. Not a big pub goer but this one gets my visit more than most even though it's not close!

We had a lovely meal here during the week. Very friendly welcome with a great menu. The meal was excellent and enough for 2 people. With our Taste Card it was even greater value. Would definitely go again and would recommend it to others.
