Having heard that the Fox was good and that, even more importantly, it was close to where we were staying, we booked it in advance and looked forward to our meal.

Despite a few locals saying that it wasn't as good as it used to be (I suspect they have strong allegiances to the last owner), we absolutely loved it.

The menu was very good and nice and varied. The crab starter was delicious and the asparagus cooked to perfection. One of our party had calves liver for a main course and it was very good indeed - no sign of over-cooking and very tender: real melt in the mouth stuff of dreams!

The pub was packed out and if you're going, you definitely need to book in advance. The only slight downside is that the service was a little confused at time but some of the waiting staff are very young and still learning - they'll get it right eventually. They were very sweet though and smiley throughout so it wasn't a problem - this is, after all, a pub and not the Ritz! It's not cheap though so take a well-packed wallet with you!

So despite an occasional local comparing it to the past unfavourably, we thoroughly enjoyed our experience..

Gutted when I saw the Old Butchers had closed but delighted to see Peter and Louise here.

Food still fabulous yet not snobby. Love coming back here.

Have dined in some of the best UK restaurants including Michelin stars and for me, this one beats them all for the balance of great food, great atmosphere, and a relaxed ambience.

The Fox Inn is tucked away in a small village off the beaten track. So, why is it that on a midweek evening it is packed with diners? The answer - great food, excellent service and a beautiful restaurant. We've been on the move from Cornwall to Cotswolds in the last fortnight and this was our stand-out dining experience. From the pint at the bar with a decent head on it, the splendid rear garden where we enjoyed drinks before dinner, the welcome from friendly staff to the varied and interesting menu - it came up trumps. I had the venison with chocolate infused red cabbage. It was a winner on all fronts. Entrees and desserts great too. An extensive wine list with good wines for every price category. I wasn't driving on this occasion but can see the benefit of booking the accommodation so you can retire from restaurant and bar to countryside room. My wife and son and friends were similarly impressed. I'll certainly recommend the Fox to Sydney friends.

Now the Robinsons [ Previously at the 'Old Butchers' in Stowe] are settling in their new surroundings, Peter Robinsons superb cooking now has the setting he deserves. Give them a few more weeks to settle in and 'The Fox' will be superb.

When we arrived at The Fox for lunch on a Saturday we were told the restaurant was fully booked but that they had two tables left in the bar.

When we received our food we understood why. The food was excellent as was the service.

Even better they understood that real ales should NOT be chilled to a state where they cannot be tasted, but should be served at room or cellar temperature so that ther flavours are allowed to excite the palate.

The food also excited our palates. Succulent liver and bacon, Roe deer with gnocchi, baked Alaska and champagne truffles .. all served to perfections.

We will be returning!
