We spent a night at the Oribi Gorge hotel, nearing the midpoint of our tour of eastern South Africa. The hotel is easy to find, some distance off the N2 and down an unmade approach road. This I imagine could be difficult for a conventional car to navigate in very wet weather. There had been some confusion over our booking (which we made two months in advance), but this was amicably and quickly resolved. On the Sunday night we stayed, there were few guests apart from ourselves. We were offered sherry on arrival (around 4pm) and in the gathering gloom strolled down a path to view Camel and Chimney Rocks, and to take in the views of the gorge itself and its waterfalls.

Our room was very spacious, on an upper floor with a shared balcony looking onto the trees and woodland that surround the property. The facilities were quiet and comfortable. Off the lobby a tree grows (in the building) and lends a earthy aroma to the staircase area. We had a pleasant, decent value evening meal in the hotel’s Eagle’s Eyrie restaurant in the midst of a violent thunderstorm. Breakfast likewise was enjoyable and filling, part buffet and part cooked on request.

Our plan was to go horse-riding early in the morning to see the remaining parts of the gorge. This facility I understand is offered by a separate organisation. We experienced some difficulty in making contact with the proprietor, but eventually agreed to meet her at 8.30 on the Monday. Unfortunately she did not appear. The farrier eventually brought us to the horses, but this was almost an hour later. I became concerned, as we had a long onward drive that day. As it happened, the animals were much bigger than we expected (we know nothing about horses) and as a novice I found mine very awkward and uncomfortable to sit on. So we abandoned the attempt, but paid the farrier for his trouble.

I forgot to hand in my room key on departure, but posted it back first class some two days later, and hope the hotel received it safely.

Room Tip: Upper floor rooms appear quieter, with better views.

Oribi Gorge was recommended to us as a beautiful spot to visit, but our first choice of guesthouse was booked. We booked the hotel with some trepidation. Overall we were satisfied. The hotel is lovely inside with wood-buring fireplaces in both the restaurant and the lounge/bar area. They felt wonderful with the cool evenings we had. The bar is fully stocked and has the requisite sports TV. There is generous seating everywhere - couches and tables on three sides of the hotel under cover. The restaurant has indoor and outdoor seating.

There is alot of playground equipment including a small zip line for kids.
There is a small pool, but it was not clean, probably due to the fact it is winter. However, the staff did quickly bring out lounge chairs for us to use the one day I wanted to sit by the pool.

There is a small gift shop with drinks and snacks for sale.

The bedroom (family room) that we occupied was very roomy and nicely decorated with comfortable beds and bedding. There is free water in the room. The shower is a bit strange with varying water temps and one of those glass side doors mounted on the tub. Our only complaint was the noise from the upstairs room. All walking (and other movements above) can be heard very clearly in our room. So I would request a 2nd story room to avoid this problem.

Our room price included breakfast each morning. A continental breakfast is laid out and, in addition, you can order hot items from the menu - also included in the price! What a deal!

The lunches and dinners were average fare with a few exceptions. One night they served butternut squash soup, which was delicious. The menu is extensive and very reasonably priced. I just think the food could use a little extra attention in preparation. The waitstaff was fabulous and so friendly. We really loved them!

The hotel is located adjacent to the Oribi Gorge park, so you can literally walk from your room into the park (at no cost to hotel guests). The Wild5 company offers you the chance to zipline, bungy jump/swing, abseil, and more. We just enjoyed watching others be Wild. We hiked to the overhanging rocks and crossed the suspension bridge for free.

Room Tip: Book a second floor room.

The rooms are very good. The service and the restaurant are good. The best is the position of this hotel in the Oribi Gorge park. This landscape is impressive. Furthermore you can walk to the so called "Wild 5" (described on the hotels homepage).

The bad thing is the very high price. Internet was not available.
