“A relaxing getaway just out of Durban”
Reviewed September 18, 2013

So last weekend we took a "short-left" to the peaceful surrounds of the Umtentweni river and stayed at the historical Royston Hall.
We were welcomed by the two, my girlfriend calls them "horse-dogs", of the biggest Dalmation dogs we've ever seen and the very friendly Ria.
The meals were superb throughout our stay, with supper served with a lovely bottle of wine.
Overall, this was a very peaceful stay from the time you drive in; with so much greenery overlooking the river and the calming sound of birds chirping.
We round up our stay with a 3.4km hike on Sunday morning offered by the Conservancy and recommended by Ria. This hike leads you to the Whale watching deck where we enjoyed a beautiful sea-breeze, although we didnt spot any whales :-)

A truly lovely stay and one I'd definitely repeat.

Room Tip: Ask for the holiday suite or one of the outside rooms for privacy

Ria was so personal and welcomed me after a rather nasty experience. The food was superbly prepared, presented and tasted even better. Highly recommended. The view over the river is amazing. I will definitely recommend Royston Hall to colleagues and friends who wish to experience tranquility and great service away from home.

Staying at royston hall was fantastic, views are beautiful, we saw lots of birds and a turtle in the river. It's very peacefull and my husband and I enjoyed the quiet surroundings. The room we stayed in was vey big and well equipped. Breakfast was great.

Room Tip: We stayed in the honeymoon room and it was great. Very big and spacious, bed was very comfortable.

The house and area is beautiful with an amazing view over the river. I only stayed one night but would have loved to stay an extra day just to explore the immediate area and do some walking trails. The owners are very friendly and helpful and know the history and great anecdotes about the origin and history of the house - all very interesting. We were the only guests at the time and were treated like family - even by the beautiful dogs.

My husband and I were looking for somewhere at little "different" to celebrate our 39th Wedding Anniversary - Royston Hall certainly fulfilled that need. As soon as we turned into the driveway we knew we had chosen the right place, this tranquil spot is delightful, we were warmly received by Ria, the dogs and the cat! The house is magnificent and you feel as if you have been transported back in time, we chose to dine in and we experience a gourmet meal served in lavish style in the dining room - it could have been a scene from 'Downton Abbey'.

Our room was in the main house and overlooked the river, delightfully decorated , with an enormous four poster bed, which was extremely comfortable and we has a very restful night's sleep, to be awoken by the hornbill's knocking on the window!

Breakfast - another wonderful meal - was taken on the wide veranda to the sound of bird calls and the wind in the trees surrounding us.

A truly delightful and memorable stay

As we drove down towards Royston Hall in a natural forest we knew something special lurked in these woods. And we were right! When we arrived at Royston Hall Guest House we were charmed by the grace and class of this most impressive Victorian Home. It felt like we had gone back in time and had entered the age of Kings and Queens. Our passionate host, Michelle, made us feel like royalty. We could immediately tell how much she loved people and her beautiful home. She really made us feel at home and comfortable. There's so much interesting history stored in that house that you could spend the whole day touring it. We felt Royston Hall is ideal for young or older lovers looking to get lost and find themselves again. We insist that you visit this gem. Our only regret was that we spent just one night but we vowed to return.
