Description: Eine Küche mit vielen Gesichtern.

“Expected more”
Reviewed March 24, 2014 via mobile

Dined here with my wife and sister in law. It was a bit of a let down. Expected much more from this place. Decore and staff are great but food is just ok. And the prices are way too steep for what you get. Also no menus in english.

“African touches in Zurich”
Reviewed February 18, 2014 via mobile

We enjoyed a very nice dinner at Mama Africa. The interior designs makes you feel being in Africa, even the service staff does (he was south-african, speaking english only). Food was very tasty and service was quick and pleasent. Will definately come again .....

“Great potential - but all in all just average”
Reviewed February 16, 2014

We went there for Valentine's Day and were very impressed with the location and the great decorations and atmosphere.
The waiter was really friendly - however, he did mess up one of our orders and forgot to bring one of the entrées. While the menu (almond soup and beef for the main course and a panna cotta for desert) was very delicious, the Malay Chicken curry was nothing special at all. It was nice of the waiter to offer us coffee after forgetting the soup, however, we felt there was room for improvement.

“Enjoyed it”
Reviewed January 13, 2014

We decided for Mama's table which included a variety of dishes and was definitely tasty, although not really comparable to original SA food (I have been to South Africa a couple of times). It felt a bit like eating Chinese food in Switzerland (and most other non-asian countries): definitely nice and exotic, but a Chinese native would probably not recognize it. One exception was the Boerewors, which instantly reminded me of a typical Braai.

I was somewhat disappointed that there was barely any game (except for Springbok and Zebra, plus Crocodile, but no Kudu, Wildebeest, etc.) and no fish at all (no Kingklip - you can even buy that in Migros!) on the menu.

The ambiance was great, though, and the service really friendly. We were asked, if we had enough or whether we would like some more food. A couple of minutes later, the waiter brought us another round of Boerewors and some more rice (we could have even ordered more, but there was plenty of food in the first place). Dessert was nice too.

As a minor comment, we were surprised when we asked the waiter for Rooibos Tea and he responded that they only have black tea. We then ordered some and, in fact, got a bag of Rooibos. Given that you can buy this tea even in many Swiss grocery stores, I would have suspected that the staff of a South-African-style restaurant knows exactly what Rooibos is.

All in all, Mama Africa is still quite unique and a good place to visit perhaps once a year or so.
