“nice intro to zurich food scene for tourists”
Reviewed August 25, 2013

came to this place after doing some brief research on options for tourists to zurich to sample local cuisines. the place is strategically located along bahnhofstrasse, the main shopping artery of zurich, the restaurant is quite big, and it was crowded when i arrived, demonstrating how popular it is. i was shown to a table after a brief wait. i ordered Kalbsgeschnetzeltes nach Zürcher Art from the menu which is basically a pot of veal & mushroom in a creamy sauce with quite a nice rosti. the dish is quite tasty but comes in a big portion so was very full when i finished it. prices for the most of the dishes are on the high side.
service was abrupt due to the high number of guests streaming in. it was a good intro to the local cuisine but don't think i will be returning, there are other local restaurants in zurich that warrant a try.

“Memorable meal”

Great atmosphere and fast service in a traditional beer hall style. Service fast and despite being heaving we did not have to wait long for a table. Good food - bratwurst recommended

“Do not miss this place if you are in Zurich”
Reviewed August 21, 2013

We used a Fodor's guide and found this place which is attracting both locals and tourists. Do not miss this restaurant. You can eat in or outside. Outside is nice but the atmosphere inside is what you want. Like a large "beer hall" with a blending of families, couples and small groups. Loud but not too loud. A fun place with engaging wait staff who have a sense of humor, at least our waiter did. A good menu of local dishes and nice size portions. You have to have their potato salad which comes with most dishes. The best i have had. Nice selection of entrees and quite reasonable for Zurich. Right off of the Bahnofstrasse with a great and easy to find location. Go there you will not be disappointed.

“Straightforward food, rushed service.”
Reviewed August 17, 2013 via mobile

Very traditional German style Beerkeller in rebuilt former armoury. Evidence of it past adorns the place from old weapons and armour through to 20th century machine guns and what looks like an anti aircraft gun over the entrance inside. Food was ok - nothing very special, although the rosti was very good.

The defining experience for us was the patchy service. With no reservation, we were offered a table that was reserved in one hours time. Normally I would go somewhere else but we were foot weary after sightseeing in Zurich so we took the table. I hate being rushed and it became immediately obvious this was going to be a problem. Firstly, there are VERY prominent reserved signs on the tables with the time of the reservation IN BIG NUMBERS. This leaves you in no doubt that the clock is ticking. Not conducive to a relaxed meal or very welcoming. Immediately after we ordered drinks we noticed that there were tables around us that were not reserved. I called a waitress to see if we could move tables - she completely ignored me! However, when our waiter returned with the drinks she very clearly told him that I had tried to get her attention - presumably she ignored me as we were not in her section. We asked our waiter for one of the unreserved tables and he happily moved us - into the section of the waitress who earlier ignored us. Clearly we were right to ask to be moved as the people behind us were on a reserved table and the waitress repeatedly asked them to hurry up and order as the table was reserved and reminded them of this several times - including giving them a "5 minute" warning.

The service left is feeling that their philosophy is "eat up, pay up and push off".

To be honest the food, whilst good, wasn't good enough to overcome the rushed and unwelcoming service.

“Come for the atmosphere and beer, not really the food”
Reviewed August 13, 2013 via mobile

It's a really fun venue, inside an old armoury, and is often heaving. Lots of tourists, but still great fun - we had an oompa band on our last visit, which made the evening great fun. The food isn't bad, but it's not amazing either - but just order more beer, chat to a neighbour, and you'll be fine.
