EMA House Hotel Suites
Ranked #11 of 137 Hotels in Zurich
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed July 5, 2012

The EMA house - Zurich All Suite Hotel is very good value for money and suitable for families. We were on the 5th floor, the bedroom, sitting room and bathrooms were very spacious although the decoration was a little spartan. It is located not far from the central train station, to walk there you would go up a small hill, so not if you are carrying heavy luggage. Walking back to the station takes 10 minutes downhill.The trams 11 and 14 comes often and stops just in front of the hotel, it takes 4-5 minutes by tram to the main train station. The breakfast is continental with a good selection of bread, different cheeses and cold meats, juice, cereals as well as hot drinks. All of this is served to the room at the designated hour. The beds are comfortable as were the blankets. There is air conditioning and a bathtub as well as a shower. It is well suited to families or groups who are planning to stay more than one night since there there is plenty of room to spread around and more than one toilet. One can watch tv in the sitting room, write postcards at the office desk, dine around a dining table, cook in the kitchen. Considering the prices of Swiss hotels, this one is very reasonable. The rooms come with a large safe which can fit in a laptop. There is no front desk staff after 9pm so ask for toiletries (toothbrush etc) before then.

I am staying in the residential suite at the moment so this review is a little preemptive but it is really good (the apartment not the review). It is quiet so allows for restful nights. Serviced daily by the maid. Close the the main railway station and everything else in Zurich. I am here with my four year old so the two bedrooms and the space is great.
The apartment does need airing out daily which is fine seeing it is summer. The tv is old but does the job. All my possessions seem safe seeing 3 doors are required to access to get into the apartment.
Upon reception I was greeted well and the staff member walked me from reception to the apartment just around the corner.
Would not look anywhere else again upon my return to Zurich.

This is the first time that a hotel has taken the trouble to welcome me as a returning guest, even though my previous visit was in 2007. At check-in I was upgraded to an apartment. In the room, a personalised hand-written note referred to my previous visit.

The one bedroom apartment has an entrance hall, a living room (including a work desk), a dining room that is also excellent as a meeting room, a kitchenette as well as bedroom with spacious en-suite bathroom. These facilities are larger and better equipped than the apartments of many locals.

This hotel does a series of small things well that makes it stand out from the rest:
Friendly helpful staff.
Breakfast is served in the comfort of your own room at the time that you select.
The choice of complementary toiletries is comprehensive.
Umbrellas are provided for the duration of your stay.
They did not charge for my local phone calls.
Chocolates every night.
Air conditioning.

I am looking forward to returning here again.

This hotel is built like a safe in a swiss bank. The room key operates the elevator. No key - no elevator access:-). The door jambs are something like 10" deep and the doors and handles, you guessed it, look somewhat like those of a safe. The junior suite is spacious, outer motorized window blinds are in good working order. The staff is very helpful, we had a few unusual requests, and I don't remember reception folks being more friendly and helpful anywhere else. The included breakfast is very good, we didn't try their lunch or dinner. There's wifi and ethernet, but it's not free. But there a laundry in the basement and guests can use it for free. The hotel is not far from where tourists want to be in Zurich. We walked, but there's a tram line as well. Overall, extremely happy with our stay.

We just returned from a week long stay at the EMA house. We were greeted by very friendly reception staff. Check-in was a breeze and the receptionist led us to our room. They upgraded us from a junior suite to an executive suite. We had a view of the river from our living room. The main train station is also just a 10 min walk away. I do my morning runs along the river and it is beautiful. The tram stops are right outside the hotel. Very convenient. Breakfast was served in our room. They gave us a lot of food (yogurt, breads, cereal, juice, coffee/tea/hot chocolate, cheeses and cured meats). We are gluten free and they provided us with gluten free bread and a toaster. The room was immaculate. Kudos to the cleaning staff. They have paid wifi which worked okay. It was 15francs / week. Chocolate on our beds every night. They have computers and printers as well for printing out boarding passes in their computer room. The room is a bit expensive (so is everything in Switzerland), but this is excellent value.

My friend and I stayed in this Hotel - 27-29 Apr and 18-19 May - and we must admit that this is was the best value for money we paid and even more! To start with we were upgraded on our first stay up to Family Suite, got handwritten welcoming message, sweet touch of Swiss chololate on our beds :)

Positive points:

- in spite of not very central location I wouldnt consider it inconvenient at all, everything was so close that we even prefered to walk to/from trainstation along with our luggage!
- they have their own garage
- good b/f directly into your room!!
- new bath amenities/renovated bathroom; you even have slippers and bathrobes!
- lots of good channels in english;
- due to a good entrance door - you wont hear anything from the corridor;
- spare ambrella in the room;
- you will be provided even with weather forecast.

Drawbacks:

- obsolete a/c, though for 3 star its presence is already a big plus;
- not enough power sockets in the room (family suite living room, near the working desk - no one free! Though in Junior Suite I didnt notice that);
- no wifi in the room;
- noisy - windows dont provide a room (even sleeping area) with a good soundproof from street noise;
- no additional blanket in the room;
- some might find "limited working hours of the reception" (6.45 am - 9pm) - a bit uncomfortable, but we did not.

My wife and I stayed at the Ema House for one night in May of 2012 at a cost of over $200 total. The room was designed like an apartment with a bedroom and a living room. The rooms were clean and relatively well maintained, albeit the floorboards were unfinished, which gave the room disheveled look. The hotel is one of the most secure I’ve ever stayed in with vault style locks that are used for entry into the hotel and the room. The hotel location seems safe, so I’m not sure why the excessive security measures are placed upon guests. The security is not a inconvenience, it just seems a bit out of place. Our complimentary breakfast was brought to our room (room service style), so that made for a fun morning experience.

Room Tip: The tourist area of Zurich has limited shopping on Sundays, so you can expect to lots of people walk...
