“Amazing hotel & amazing LOCATION!”
Reviewed August 22, 2013

This hotel is wonderful and I would stay here every time I'm in Zurich. It is located right in the center and probably about a 10 min lovely walk through small cobblestone promenades, from the river. The hotel staff was wonderful and catered to my every need. The TV is a bit small in the room but that went unnoticed because the location is amazing! It is10 min from the train station and right in the middle of everything in Zurich! I wish I could've stayed longer!

The concierge also informed me of a place to rent bikes for free, just have to leave a 20 CHF deposit which you get back. And just a warning the bikes go quick so it is advisable to get one early in the morning (before 9am). The ride through the old city and along Lake Zurich was amazing! I definitely recommend it to anyone!

This is a goodish hotel, first class location, nice rooms, good bathrooms but several points need attention and it is a pity these are not addressed because this has the potential to be a very good hotel.

First impressions are important. Ours were bad. We booked our accommodation more than three months in advance through an agent and paid in full. Three weeks before our arrival, I sent the hotel a fax asking them to confirm that they had the reservation and requesting a room not affected by traffic noise. They did not reply. I sent a second fax. They did not reply to that either. I began to wonder what sort of place I was dealing with and had to make an intercontinental telephone call to check on the reservation. The young girl who answered said she could not see any reservation. When I began to protest, she passed me to a colleague who immediately confirmed the booking and said that they had noted the request for a quiet room, thus proving that they had received the faxes. So why did they not reply?

We arrived in a rain storm and had to manage our bags ourselves from the taxi and into the foyer. Once inside out of the rain with the luggage, we were asked if we would like some help. Well, yes, five minutes ago, please. At check-in, two of the four people behind the reception desk were "Trainees". The one assigned to us had to constantly ask her colleague for guidance. It hardly inspired confidence. After checking-in, we made our way to the room down a long corridor with a badly soiled carpet, plain white walls and grey doors. It seemed like an institution, however, the room turned out to be a lovely surprise - big, bright with lovely beds, nice furniture and every facility one could hope for. Unfortunately there were no instructions for the Nespresso-type coffee machine. The bathroom was a bit small for a big bloke, but well equipped. In short, an excellent place to stay.

As the rain continued all evening, we decided to eat in the hotel restaurant which styled itself "Casual Asian Dining". As Asian cuisine extends from Turkey to Japan, maybe we should have been cautious. Several items on the menu claimed to be "in the Thai style" and we settled for those. Only one other table was occupied so the staff were not rushed. Nothing that we ordered had any taste at all or bore any resemblance to oriental cuisine. The spring rolls were utterly bland. A green curry had no taste of curry and my wok fried chicken was shocking. I know enough about cooking and food science to know that this was precooked chicken, probably steamed, and just tossed in a wok with a glutinous brown sauce, which was tasteless, to heat through. What was "Casual" was the attitude of the serving staff who clattered and banged crockery, cutlery and utensils non-stop. Apart from the poor food, the restaurant is unattractive and badly laid out with the most uncomfortable little wooden chairs.

Breakfast the following morning was even worse. Breakfast is advertised as 6.30am till 11am, but we found at 8.40am that the buffet was severely depleted. The cold cuts tray was empty, there were only a few strips of processed cheese left and just three small bread rolls were lying on the bottom of the bread basket (which was on a high shelf above eye and shoulder height). The buffet was laid out in a corner and one slow person could block access. The serving girls did not seem to think that they had to replenish anything. There were several unoccupied tables, but they were all littered with used crockery and half-eaten food. No effort was being made to clear them. For the rest of our stay, we had breakfast elsewhere.

To sum up, a good place to stay, but avoid eating here.

Room Tip: Ask for a room not overlooking the road.

The key issue of booking this hotel is the location which is in the city center in Zurich, 7min walking from the railway station.
The hotel has an excellent value for money proposition with clean and quite big rooms.
Breakfast is ok, nothing special.
The rooms at the high floors have a big and confortable balcony to enjoy the view of the city.

Room Tip: High floor rooms are quiter and have a big balcony.

You can't be more central in Zurich, everything is within walking distance. The rooms were nicely decorated/furnished and had a Nespresso coffee machine which is a big plus if you like good coffee. We had to ask for additional pillows as the ones supplied were flat.
The staff was very friendly and helpful. Breakfast was also good, with a good selection of items of high quality. There's free WiFi both in the rooms and the public areas - well done!
I can recommend this hotel without any reservation. It's an excellent choice if you want to stay in central Zurich for shopping or business or just to sightsee.

It has a great location, and some rooms are small, but the service is pretty good.
Very expensive, but Zurich is like that.
I would recommend people to go.
Try the Hiltl restaurant across that is the best vegetarian place I've ever been.
Great breakfast!

Room Tip: The ones facing the street are nicer!

As our usual ZH hotel was fully booked, we decided to give Seidenhof a go. Considering its excellent location, the price was very attractive. We checked-in with no problems and had a fairly spacious corner room directly overlooking the bend in the street below. As we were unpacking we noticed a general lack of cleanliness: dust on the shelves about the hangars, mold on the ceiling above the shower-tub, mildew around the base... and then we made the unpleasant discovery of the previous guest's dirty socks in the drawer. For me this wasn't tragic, but it demonstrates that attention to detail is certainly lacking.
We spent the night tossing and turning on a very uncomfortable bed. Fluctuating room temperature didn't help with sleep either. We arrived for breakfast on the late side (20 mins before closing) and took our time eating and planning our day. The multitude of young servers were inefficient with the seating and coffee service but very fast (ie without any warning to any remaining patrons) at putting away the breakfast items while we and the others hurriedly tried to get a last micro-glass of orange juice before it was whisked out of our hands. We new we had overstayed our welcome in the breakfast room when the kitchen boss showed up and started angrily (and loudly) dressing down one of his cooks a few metres from our table. Poor fellow had clearly forgotten to prepare something that the boss had printed on the menu...
We left, walked 25 metres down the street and were happy to discover that the Glockenhof suddenly had space. The extra 75CHF per night at the Glockenhof was certainly worth it...
