My wife and I stayed at the Wellenberg for just one night, September 19, 2006, to facilitate catching a return flight to the US after a guided tour around Switzerland. We wish we had stayed longer! The room and bathroom were good-sized (rare in Europe), very clean, and had a very attractive view of the plaza that stretches beyond the hotel's front door. It was decorated in a bright, modern fashion featuring pictures of movie stars; ordinarily, we would dislike this sort of thing, but here it worked. In spite of its proximity to that busy plaza, the room was very quiet at night. We only had time for a brief walk along Niederdorfer Street, but window-shopping on this pedestrian mall was a delight: all art and artisans, and no chain stores. The street becomes progressively seedier as you approach the railroad station (we witnessed a drunken brawl during our perambulation), but the area within a few blocks of the hotel is very attractive, interesting, and appeared safe. The hotel's small lobby and reception desk could, presumably, become crowded and check-in/out delayed, but we didn't experience that during our visit, and the desk clerks accommodated us and our questions with great patience and courtesy. The coffee pot in our room didn't work and was replaced immediately after we complained about it. We strongly recommend Hotel Wellenberg.
